City police arrest man for raping son's teen girlfriend

CORTLAND -- A Marathon man was arrested Saturday for raping his son’s teenage girlfriend in December at a residence on Lincoln Avenue, according to city police.

Michael K. Carman, 40, who is now living at 28 Academy Street, Apt. 1, Marathon, used his strength to overpower a 15-year-old girl and rape her at about 2:15 a.m. Dec. 13, according to police. The girl was dating Carman’s son and spending the night at their home, then at 64 Lincoln Ave., Cortland, said city police Lt. David Guerrera.

The attack was reported to police in February, Guerrera said. Over the weekend, Carman went to the City Police Station at 25 Court St. to make a statement regarding the ongoing investigation, said Lt. Michael Strangeway.

Carman was arrested at 12:19 p.m. Saturday at the police station, according to police. He was charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sex abuse, both felonies, as well as forcible touching, endangering the welfare of a child, providing a false written statement and obstructing government administration, misdemeanors.

During the investigation, Carman lied to police in a written statement hindering the probe, according to police.

Carman was arraigned Saturday in City Court and sent to jail on $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond, according to police. He is set to reappear at 3 p.m. today in City Court.
