On Friday December 6th  from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., visitors are invited to explore the Cultural Council of Cortland County’s First Friday event.

Coordinated by the Cultural Council of Cortland County, this month’s event features five venues: the 1890 House Museum, the Cortland Free Library, the Dowd Gallery at SUNY Cortland, The Gallery at the Center for the Arts, and the YWCA Cortland.

“One of the great things about First Friday is that you have the opportunity to ‘choose your own adventure,’” notes Cultural Council Executive Director Kat McCarthy, “You can pick up a map at any participating venue and then chart your own course, deciding which venues to visit over the course of the evening.”

Art enthusiasts will have a variety of exhibits to explore this month. First Friday is the closing night for the Dowd Gallery’s Beyond Places in Time exhibit. At the Cortland Free Library, David Beale and Friends will exhibit portraits his students painted as class projects. David will also exhibit a selection of small paintings from his recent trip to Costa Rica. Artist Emily Gibbons is celebrating her 10-year anniversary of moving to Cortland at the YWCA with an exhibit, Painting Cortland, 2010 – 2019, which includes local paintings created during this time period. In Homer, at The Gallery at the Center for the Arts, guests can explore the works of seven different artists in the 17th Annual Rock Garden Art Show.

Over at the 1890 House Museum, the Elves have returned for the Elf on the Shelf scavenger hunt. The whole Museum has been swarmed by elves and it is up to you to hunt through all four floors to find these sneaky elves! Several readings from the Elf on the Shelf books will also take place. Even if you miss story time, you can still visit and put your sleuthing skills to the test!

Activities typically take place from 5 p.m – 8 p.m., though visitors should refer to the event map or Cultural Council website for details about each participating venue. For more information about First Friday, please visit: https://www.culturalcouncilofcortlandcounty.org/first-fridays
