Cortland Weather Outlook: Friday, March 20

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Friday, March 20, 2020:

A strong cold front will move through the area late today, resulting in a variety of meaningful weather conditions.

The biggest stories will be the wind and warm temperatures out ahead of the front.

Winds from the south and southwest will increase this morning and peak during the midday and afternoon hours. Wind speeds will be between 15-20 mph with gusts over 50 mph.

Those winds will drive temperatures up, despite limited sunshine. Afternoon highs will top out in the upper 60s.

A few scattered showers will be possible this morning, but a better chance for rain will come in the afternoon. The rain will come in the form of brief showers and a few thunderstorms.

Most of the time it will be dry, but those showers and storms may have some brief, heavy downpours.

Any storms that develop will also have the potential to enhance the winds, leading to low-end severe status and sporadic wind damage.

Temperatures will crash behind the front, falling through the 50s and 40s in the evening, and into the 30s, then 20s overnight.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Saturday: Sunny but much colder and breezy. Morning lows in the low 20s. Afternoon highs in the mid 30s.

Sunday: Mostly sunny. Morning lows in the mid teens. Afternoon highs in the upper 30s.

Monday: Periods of snow. Some accumulations possible but uncertain. Morning lows in the upper 20s. Afternoon highs in the low 30s.
