On Monday morning, July 13th, 2020, at approximately 9:58 AM, the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Cortland County Airport for a report of a plane crash.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the single engine aircraft, which was occupied by both the pilot and co-pilot, had originated its flight from the Cortland County Airport. While after take-off, both the pilot and co-pilot had reported windy conditions and decided to land the aircraft in a field west of the runway, staying on Cortland County Airport Property. While landing the aircraft, both the pilot and co-pilot were unable to control the aircraft, and the aircraft went into a skid where the aircraft did sustain damage coming to its final rest. The pilot, who at this time his name is not being released, is being treated for both leg and back pain and was later transported by TLC to Guthrie Cortland Regional Medical Center where his injuries are not being considered life threatening at this time. The co-pilot, was not reporting any injuries.
The investigation is continuing and Investigators with the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office were in contact with the FAA, where they responded and assisted with the investigation. Due to the plane crash, the Cortland County Airport was closed for approximately 3 ½ hours before the plane could be removed and the runway reopened.
