City, SUNY police team up & arrest man in stolen car for home burglary

City police arrested an Ithaca man for burglary Saturday after he was recognized by campus police during a traffic stop in a stolen car, according to the department.

Kemar S. Tyndale, 24, of 412 Hudson Street Apt. 2 was caught on security video rummaging through a bedroom in a student apartment at 81 Lincoln Ave., said Lt. David Guerrera.

At about 10:20 p.m. Friday, while the students were out of their apartment, Tyndale entered the residence and started searching dressers, closets, cupboards, desks, and backpacks looking for something valuable to steal, Guerrera said. After entering one student’s bedroom, Tyndale spotted the recording light of a home security camera and fled the apartment without stealing any items, he said.

When the students returned home later, they realized the apartment was scoured over and contacted city police, according to the department.

Meanwhile, a SUNY Cortland University Police Officer pulled over a vehicle on Prospect Terrace for having a tail light out, said Chief Mark DePaull this morning. The driver was Tyndale and when the UPD officer ran the license plate through an information database, the car was listed as stolen, said DePaull.

University police arrested Tyndale for criminal possession of stolen property and contacted city police, as they were searching for a man matching Tyndale’s description and a car matching the description of the stolen vehicle, he said.

City officers identified Tyndale as the man in the video and arrested him at 2:38 a.m. at the Cortland Police Department after picking him up at the University Police Department station, according to Guerrera and DePaull.

City police charged Tyndale with felony second-degree burglary, as well as third-degree criminal tampering and attempted petit larceny, misdemeanors.

Tyndale was arraigned in City Court and released. He is scheduled to reappear at 10 a.m. Feb. 17 in City Court.
