Cortland County Rivalry Match-Up: Homer Varsity Girls Basketball Defeats Cortland

Last night, the Homer varsity girls basketball team took on County rival Cortland and defeated them 57-35.

The Homer Trojans took a stand defensively, as they yet again had a 20+ steal game. According to Homer Head Coach CJ Kudla, the team’s defensive pressure was the “difference maker” last night.

Homer’s Catherine Apker led all scorers with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Gracie Patriarco scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while both Sarah and Katlyn Sovocool each scored seven points.

The Cortland Tigers were led by junior Kirsten Merritt with 11 points and five boards. Following Merrit was Margaret Starr with nine points and Paige Ludwig with seven points and an additional 10 boards.

"We played with a ton of poise and control on offense again today,” said Coach Kudla. “Cortland is very well coached and a very sound team. They have some very good guard play and some other long athletes that can get it up and down the court.”

Up next, Homer (2-1) will host Weedsport at home today (February 18th, 2021) at noon; while Cortland (0-2) will hit the road to take on Bishop Grimes on Friday, February 19th at 5pm.
