Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 10th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Football: Homer vs. Chittenango

The Homer Trojans started their season off with a 61-14 win over Chittenango at home on Friday. 

Homer’s scorers include Peck Logan (4 rushing touchdowns), Sam Sorenson (1 receiving touchdown off a pass from quarterback Jake Calabro), Hunter Riehlman (1 rushing touchdown), Jeffrey Stauber (1 rushing touchdown), and Damani Durham (1 rushing touchdown). 

Chittenango’s touchdowns were scored by Ethan Robles and Aiden Cavotta. 

Up next, the Trojans will take on Vernon-Verona-Sherrill on the road on Friday (September 17th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Football: Cortland vs. Oneida

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost 0-29 against Oneida on their first game of the season at home. 

Oneida’s scorers include Braedon Williams (2 rushing touchdowns), Bryson Carinci (1 rushing touchdown), and Wuest Ryan (1 receiving touchdown off a pass from Bryson Carinci).

The Tigers will look to bounce back on Friday (September 17th) as they take on New Hartford at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. McGraw

The Cincinnatus Lions took down County rivals McGraw with a score of 5-0 on the road.

Cincinnatus’ offense was led by Kyla Sustad (2 goals & 1 assist), Jarisa Temple (2 goals), and Cassia Schuyler (1 goal). 

McGraw’s goalkeeper Heather Magee recorded a total of 15 saves in the game. 

Cincinnatus (3-0) will play Otselic Valley on the road on Tuesday (September 14th) at 4:30pm; while McGraw will look to bounce back as they take on Stockbridge Valley on the road on Tuesday (September 14th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. McGraw

It was an exciting Cortland County matchup between Cortland and McGraw on Friday. The game was won by McGraw with a score of 1-2. 

“This was a really good hard fought game for the entire 80 minutes today,” said McGraw Head Coach Jamey Crumb. “I was very pleased with how we were winning the 50/50 balls and defending as a unit. A lot of players stepped up today.”

Both of McGraw’s goals were scored in the second half of the game by Nate Stiles (assisted by Jackson Pitcher) and Jackson Card (unassisted).

Cortland’s only goal was scored by Nick Yonta (assisted by Dmytro Onyshchuk) in the first half. 

McGraw goalkeeper Nolan Knickerbocker recorded 14 saves, while Scott Hourigan made 7 saves for Cortland.  

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Watkins Glen Central

The Marathon Olympians improved to a 2-1 record on the season after defeating Watkins Glen Central with a score of 6-1 at home on Friday. 

Marathon’s offense was led by Braeden Morrison (2 goals & 1 assist), Bryce Howe (1 goal), Tristan Byron (1 goal & 1 assist), Connor Holland (1 goal), and Sam Casellot (1 goal)

Watkins Glen Central’s two goals were scored by Stoyan Bond and Liam Smith. 

The Olympians will take on Southern Cayuga on the road on Tuesday (September 14th) at 4:30pm in hopes to keep improving their record. 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. ITC

The Homer Trojans are now 4-0 on the season after taking down ITC (Institute of Technology, Syracuse) in three sets on Friday. 

The Trojans were led by Kloey Roos (5 aces, 6 kills & 5 digs), Mya Updyke (8 assists & 2 digs), Mallory Douglass (2 aces & 8 digs), and Keira Miller (4 aces, 2 kills & 4 digs). 

Up next, Homer will look to keep improving their record against Solvay at home on Tuesday (September 14th) at 6pm.
