Cortland Weather Outlook: Thursday, January 20

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Thursday, January 20, 2022:

A fresh influx of cold air will move in today behind a cold front that passed through last night.

Northwest winds behind the front will blow steadily at around 10 mph throughout the day. Wind gusts will be as high as 25 mph.

These winds will prevent temperatures from rising today. With the normal daytime heating, the temperature will not fall, either. Expect temperatures throughout the day to hover in the mid teens.

Light lake effect snow will also move in on the northwest winds. Snow during the daytime will be on and off. Accumulations will be around or under and inch, but with the cold air and winds, some roads may get a bit slick.

There should be an uptick in lake effect tonight. Steadier snow will fall at increased rates. Locally as much as 4 inches could fall in some areas overnight. Most areas should see an inch or two.

The lake effect clouds will keep temperatures from getting too cold at first tonight. Evening temperatures will back into the mid single-digits. However, the snow may shift west and skies may clear. If this happens, a quick drop into subzero territory will be possible.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Friday: Mostly sunny. Morning lows around -5. Afternoon highs near 10.

Saturday: Morning sun. Increasing afternoon clouds. Morning lows around -15. Afternoon highs in the upper 10s.

Sunday: Maybe a few lake effect flurries. Mostly cloudy otherwise. Morning lows near 10. Afternoon highs in the mid 20s.

Monday: Sun, clouds, and a few flurries. Morning lows 0 to -5. Afternoon highs in the mid 10s.
