Cortland County High School Sports Recaps: Boys & Girls Basketball (January 21st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated Oswego 56-33 at home Friday night. 

The Lady Tigers were led by Mallory Turner (17 points), Kendall Mack (10 points), and Valerosa Gambitta (10 points). 

Oswego was led by Sophia Babcock (15 points) and Andrealis Colon (12 points). 

With this win, Cortland improved their overall record to 10-2. 

Up next, Cortland will take on Jamesville-Dewitt on the road this upcoming Tuesday (January 25th) at 6:45pm.

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Spencer Van Etten (SVE)

The Marathon Lady Olympians beat Spencer Van Etten (SVE) 43-33 in order to improve to an overall record of 10-2. Marathon has been ranked #3 in the state rankings for Class D since January 18th. 

“Our defense has the ability to shut teams down,” said Marathon head coach Andrew Pierce. “The guards (Anna Hoyt and Addison Oram) did a great job at the top of our zone in the second half for us. When our defense does their job, It allows Brooke (Tillotson) and Abigail (Ensign) to score for us.”

The Lady Olympians were led by Brooke Tillotson (21 points) and Abigail Ensign (16 points). 

SVE was led by Sophia Dutra (15 points) and Rhiana Lawrence (8 points). 

Up next, the Lady Olympians will take on Owego Free Academy on the road this upcoming Wednesday (January 26th at 7:15pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. McGraw

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated the McGraw Lady Eagles in an exciting Cortland County matchup with a score of 25-15 Friday night. 

The Eagles were led by Hannah Wilson (8 points) and Madison Sweeney (4 points). 

Note: Individual stats for Cincinnatus were not available at the time this article was written. 

With this result, Cincinnatus improved to a 4-9 record, while McGraw fell to 2-6. 

Up next, Cincinnatus will host Fabius-Pompey on Tuesday (January 25th) at 6pm, while McGraw hits the road to play against Stockbridge Valley on Tuesday (January 25th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Oswego after a close game that ended with a score of 48-47. 

With this win, Cortland now holds an 8-5 overall record. 

The Tigers were led by Max Gambitta (26 points), Emerson Johnson (8 points), and Marvin Bell (8 points). 

Oswego was led by Nathan Devinny (16 points), Zachary Chamberlain (11 points), and Lucas Warner (10 points). 

Up next, Cortland will host Fowler on Monday (January 24th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley (SBV)

The McGraw Eagles defeated Stockbridge Valley (SBV) 43-36 in order to improve to a 4-7 record Friday night. 

The Eagles were led by Quintin Burdick (17 points), Nick Sutton (6 points), and Cameron Nitti (6 points). 

SBV was led by Leo Jayson (10 points), Charlie Cross (7 points), and Ethan Smith (7 points). 

McGraw’s next game will be against Madison on the road this upcoming Monday (January 24th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Spencer Van Etten (SVE)

The Marathon Olympians lost a tough game against Spencer Van Etten (SVE) with a score of 49-59. 

Marathon was led by Conor Holland (32 points) and Drew Rozewski (7 points). 

SVE was led by Markus Brock (28 points) and Jayden Grube (11 points). 

With this loss, the Olympians now hold a 3-8 overall record. 

Up next, Marathon will host Tully on Monday (January 24th) at 7:30pm.
