Cortland County High School Sports Recaps: Ice Hockey, Basketball, Volleyball, and Track & Field (January 27th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. Oswego

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles took down Oswego with a score of 9-3 in order to improve to an 11-4 record. Cortland-Homer has been ranked #4 in the state for Division II since January 26th.

The Golden-Eagles were led by Chris Yang (2 goals & 2 assists), Tanner Douglass (2 goals), Braden Marsh (1 goal & 3 assists), Andrew Partigianoni (1 goal & 2 assists), Hunter Everle (1 goal & 1 assist), Tucker Gabriel (1 goal), Logan Swartz (1 goal), Mitchell Riter (3 assists), Reagan Hillman (1 assist), and Liam O'Connor (1 assist). 

Oswego was led by Lukas Cady (2 goals), Brayden Miller (1 goal), and Collin Cianfarno (1 assist). 

Cortland-Homer goalie Riley Delage made a total of 30 saves in the game, while Connor Calabro made 35 saves for Oswego. 

Up next, the Golden Eagles will take on Auburn on the road this upcoming Tuesday (February 1st) at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. Lansing

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated Lansing 71-32 Thursday night. 

With this win, the Lady Tigers now hold an 11-3 overall record. 

Cortland was led by Valerosa Gambitta (15 points), Kirsten Merritt (15 points), and Mallory Turner (15 points). 

Note: Individual stats for Lansing were not available at the time this article was written. 

The Lady Tigers’ next game will be on the road against Auburn this upcoming Tuesday (February 1st) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. DeRuyter

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions lost a tough match-up against DeRuyer in five sets. 

With this loss, Cincinnatus has fallen to an overall record of 4-6. 

Cincinnatus was led by Allyson St. Germain (9 kills, 12 digs & 4 aces), Caitlin St. Germain (7 kills, 8 digs, 22 assists & 4 aces), Jayda Mudge (7 kills, 5 digs & 5 aces), and Shannon Ryan (7 kills, 4 digs & 3 aces). 

DeRuyter was led by Keely Worlock (8 kills & 15 digs), Olivia Lidell (1 kill, 14 digs, 18 assists & 5 aces), and Madelyn Pforter (6 kills, 3 digs & 5 aces). 

Up next, Cincinnatus is scheduled to play against Stockbridge Valley on the road tonight (January 28th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Schools

The Cortland boys and girls indoor track & field teams competed in the SCAC League Championships at Onondaga Community College Thursday evening.  

The Cortland boys’ team finished 5th overall out of 8 schools, while the Cortland girls’ team  finished 7th overall out of 8 schools. 

Individual Highlights: 

Cortland Boys

  • Jack Phelan finished 3rd in the 55 meter dash (Time- 6.87). He also placed 2nd in the triple jump event (Result- 41’08.50) and placed 3rd in the long jump event (Result- 19’10.25”)
  • Jared Valentin won 1st place in the 1,600 meter run (Time- 4:41.18). He also came in 3rd in the 1,000 meter run (Time- 2:45.24)
  • Brady Pennock placed 6th in the 3,200 meter run (Time- 11:35.44)
  • Ford Egnor, Brady Pennock, Jared Valentin, and Joe Cataldo placed 5th in the 4x800 meter relay (Time- 9:54.63)
  • Thomas Johnson placed 5th in the high jump event (Result- 5’02”)
  • Duncan Harbin came in 4th in the weight throw event (Result- 43’0.50”)

Cortland Girls

  • Lillian Call won 1st place in both the 600 meter dash (Time- 1:47.10) and the 1,000 meter run (Time- 3:12.16)
  • Campbell Bush came in 3rd in the 55 meter hurdles (Time- 9.86)
  • Campbell Bush, Hannah Guernsey , Morgann Doane, and Maude Terwilliger placed 6th in the 4x200 meter relay (Time- 2:02.54)
  • Alexandra Gier placed 6th in the high jump event (Result- 4’03”)
  • Chaenaya Underwood and Rileigh Madden tied for 5th place in the pole vault event (Result- 6’06”)
  • Celeste Perkins won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result- 32’07.50). She also took 2nd place in the long jump event (Result- 15’05.25)
