Cortland County High School Sports Recaps: Ice Hockey & Basketball (February 1st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. Auburn

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles defeated Auburn 4-3 on the road Tuesday night. Cortland-Homer has been ranked #4 in the state for division II since January 26th. 

The Golden Eagles were led by Ryan Spaulding (2 goals), Tanner Douglass (1 goal & 1 assist), Andrew Partigianoni (1 goal & 1 assist), Hunter Everle (2 goals), Mitchell Riter (1 assist), and Chris Yang (1 assist).  

Auburn was led by Trey Masters (1 goal), Jack Pineau (1 goal), Jack Chapman (1 goal), Ethan Moore (2 assists), Noah Testa (1 assist), Joe Herrick (1 assist), and Luke Mizro (1 assist). 

Cortland-Homer goalie Garret Clark made a total of 18 saves in the game, while Auburn goalie Jackson Siddall made 41 saves. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close game against Auburn with a score of 50-56. 

The Tigers were led by Max Gambitta (16 points), Tyler Blake (16 points), and Marvin Bell (12 points). 

Auburn was led by Tony Borges III (14 points) and Jack Tumber (11 points). 

With this loss, the Tigers now hold a 9-8 record. 

Up next, Cortland will take on Central Square on the road this Friday (February 4th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Homer vs. Phoenix

The Homer Trojans lost a tough game to Phoenix 36-48 Tuesday night. 

This loss brings Homer down to a 5-10 overall record. 

Homer was led by Evan Butts (21 points) and Wyatt Wilbur (7 points). 

Phoenix was led by Nicholas Sisera (21 points) and Johnathan Dion (20 points). 

Up next, Homer will host Mexico on Friday (February 4th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Olympians lost a close game to Union Springs with a score of 56-63 on the road Tuesday night. 

The Olympians were led by Conor Holland (26 points) and Braeden Morrison (10 points). 

Union Springs was led by Jose Reyes (18 points) and Hunter Martin (15 points). 

With this loss, the Olympians now hold a 3-11 record. 

The Olympians’ next game will be on the road against Southern Cayuga this Friday (February 4th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost a difficult game to Union Springs with a score of 31-50 Tuesday night. Marathon has been ranked #5 in the state for Class D since February 1st, while Union Springs has been ranked #7 in the state for Class C.

The Olympians were led by Brooke Tillotson (13 points) and Abby Ensign (8 points). 

Union Springs was led by Kailey Kalet (12 points) and Madison Kalet (9 points). 

With this loss, the Lady Olympians have fallen to a 12-4 overall record. 

Up next, the Lady Olympians will host Southern Cayuga on Friday (February 4th) at 7:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost 44-62 against Auburn. 

The Tigers were led by Margaret Starr (14 points), Mallory Turner (11 points), and Kendall Mack (10 points). 

Auburn was led by Leah Middleton (27 points), Kylie Guarino (12 points), and Peyton Maneri (11 points). 

With this loss, the Lady Tigers have fallen to an overall record of 11-4. 

Cortland’s next game will be at home against Central Square on Friday (February 4th) at 6:45pm.
