Cortland Weather Outlook: Thursday, February 3

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Thursday, February 3, 2022:

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect today as weather conditions deteriorate during the second half of the day.

On and off light snow will continue this morning and into the early afternoon. There may be some periods of steadier snow and some periods where it stops snowing altogether.

This snow will be near a stalled out frontal boundary between a wave of low pressure that moved through last night, and a second wave approaching.

Precipitation will increase in coverage and intensity through the afternoon as the second wave comes in. The snow will especially come down hard during the late afternoon and evening hours, but will continue steadily through the night.

By Friday morning, as much as a foot of snow will have fallen with locally higher amounts.

There is a small chance for some sleet to mix in over southern areas during the late afternoon and evening, which could slightly reduce the snow totals there. However, the most likely scenario is for all snow to fall.

Temperatures will hold steady in the low and mid 30s through the early afternoon. Then, temperatures will fall, with upper 20s by sunset, temperatures near 20 by midnight, and mid 10s for overnight lows.

Winds will be light and variable early this morning as the front sags south through the area. Northwest winds will set up for the late morning and early afternoon with speeds around 5 mph.

The wind will turn more northerly late in the afternoon and into the evening and overnight with speeds approaching 10 mph. Top gusts will be around 20 mph.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Friday: Moderate morning snow gradually becoming light for the afternoon. Several more inches likely. Morning lows in the mid 10s. Afternoon highs in the upper 10s.

Saturday: A few early lake flakes. Then, sunny. Morning lows in the upper single digits. Afternoon highs in the mid 10s.

Sunday: Mostly sunny. Morning lows near 0. Afternoon highs in the mid 20s.

Monday: Sun and thin clouds. Morning lows near 10. Afternoon highs in the mid 30s.
