Cortland County High School Sports Recaps: Track & Field, Volleyball, Wrestling, and Basketball (February 2nd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Schools (2022 Section III Class A Championships)

The Cortland varsity boys and girls track & field teams competed in the 2022 Section III Class A Championship meet Wednesday evening. 

The Cortland boys’ team finished 5th overall out of 10 teams, while the Cortland girls’ team finished 8th overall out of 12 teams

Individual Highlights: 

Cortland Boys

  • Jack Phelan came in 3rd in the 55 meter dash (Time- 6.91). He also placed 5th in the 300 meter dash (Time- 39.82) and placed 2nd in the triple jump event (Result- 41’08.75”). 
  • Brady Pennock placed 6th in the 1,000 meter run (Time- 2:58.73). 
  • Jared Valentin won 1st place in the 1,600 meter run event (Time- 4:45.80). He also won 1st place in the 3,200 meter run event (Time- 9:53.58). 
  • Thomas Johnson placed 4th in the high jump event (Result- 5’02”). 
  • Duncan Harbin came in 4th in the weight throw event (Result- 43’06.25”). 

Cortland Girls

  • Ella Quick finished 3rd in the 300 meter dash (Time- 46.80). 
  • Lillian Call won 1st place in the 600 meter run (Time- 1:41.97). 
  • Campbell Bush placed 3rd in the 55 meter hurdles (Time- 9.84). 
  • Chaenaya Underwood placed 4th in the pole vault event (Result- 7’06”)
  • Celeste Perkins won 1st place in the triple jump event (Result- 34’10”). She also placed 4th in the long jump event 15 '07”). 

Varsity Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Faith-Heritage (Sectional Playoffs)

The #9 ranked Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated Faith Heritage (#8 ranked) in the first round of the Section III Class D Sectional Tournament. 

Cincinnatus won the match after five sets. 

Cincinnatus was led by Caitlyn St. Germain(9 kills, 4 digs, 31 assists & 10 aces), Allyson St. Germain (17 kills, 9 digs, 1 assist & 5 aces), and Jayda Mudge (8 kills, 1 block, 6 digs & 4 aces). 

Anna Dow (1 kill, 24 digs, 22 assists & 4 aces), Abby Henderson (14 kills, 19 digs & 2 aces), and Madi D'Elia (6 kills, 15 digs, 2 assists & 1 ace). 

Up next, Cincinnatus will play in the quarter-final round of the sectional tournament against Fabius-Pompey (#1 seed) on the road this Friday (February 4th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Volleyball: McGraw vs. DeRuyter (Sectional Playoffs)

 

The #14 seeded McGraw Lady Eagles lost in four sets against DeRuyter (#3 seed) in the first round of the Section III Class D Sectional Tournament.

McGraw was led by Madison Lawrence (3 kills, 2 blocks & 1 dig) and Jennifer Curtis (1 kill, 3 blocks, 2 digs & 4 aces). 

DeRuyter was led by Olivia Lidell (1 kill, 2 digs, 28 assists & 4 aces) and Keely Worlock (9 kills, 1 block, 10 digs, 1 assist & 9 aces). 

With this loss, McGraw ended their season with a 2-10 record. 

DeRuyter is now scheduled to host Manlius-Pebble Hill (#11 seed) on Friday (February 4th) at 6pm.

Varsity Wrestling: Cortland vs. Groton 

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost 30-36 against Groton Wednesday night.

Varsity Girls Basketball: McGraw vs. Cincinnatus

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated McGraw 32-30 Wednesday evening. 

With this result, Cincinnatus improved their overall record to 6-11, while McGraw fell to 2-9. 

Cincinnatus was led by Cassia Schuyler (11 points), Kaedance Latta (7 points), Emma Finch (7 points)

McGraw was led by Heather Magee (8 points) and Hailey McCall (8 points). 

Up next, Cincinnatus will take on Brookfield on the road this Friday (February 4th) at 6pm, while McGraw hosts Otselic Valley on Tuesday (February 8th) at 6pm.
