Man arrested for alleged intent to set house on fire

A Cortland County man was arrested this past Friday in regards to his alleged intent to set a house on fire in the village of Marathon back on Jan. 9, according to a report from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office.

In January, the Marathon Fire Department and other local departments dispatched to a house fire on Swift Street in the village. The New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and representatives from the county sheriff’s office, who were on scene, investigated and determined “the fire was set intentionally,” according to the report.

The investigation further found that Chad A. McKane, 40, of Cortland, a former resident of the Swift Street home, was the one who “intentionally set the fire that damaged the home,” the report states.

The report states that warrants were requested and signed by the Marathon Town Court for McKane’s arrest. McKane also violated an order of protection “by damaging the home,” according to the report.

McKane has been charged with third-degree arson (a Class-C Felony), second-degree criminal mischief (a Class-D Felony) and first-degree criminal contempt (a Class-E Felony)

McKane was processed at the county sheriff’s office and turned over to the Cortland County Jail on Friday. He was later released on one’s own recognizance through the centralized arraignment program.

McKane is due to appear in the town of Marathon court Wednesday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m.
