Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Volleyball: Cortland vs. Fowler

The Cortland Lady Tigers started their season off with a win at home against Fowler Wednesday night. 

The Lady Tigers won the match in three sets. 

Cortland was led by Molly Steve (8 assists & 6 aces), Kaedyn Murphy (6 kills & 1 block), Aliza McCormick (4 kills & 2 digs), and Aaliyah Henley-Amey (3 kills & 2 aces). 

Cortland is now scheduled to play at home against Lansing tonight (September 8th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians lost their first game of the season against Southern Cayuga with a close score of 1-2 on the road. 

 With this loss, Marathon now holds a 2-1 record. 

Marathon was led by Kaiden Cornell (1 goal) and Julian Spizzirri (4 saves). 

Southern Cayuga was led by Ben Kermidas (1 goal), Bryce David (1 goal), and Brandon Vanacore (2 saves). 

Up next, Marathon is scheduled to play Cazenovia in the first round of the "DeRuyter Kick Off Tournament" at DeRuyter High School today (September 8th) at 5pm.

Varsity Cross Country: Homer vs. Christian Brothers Academy

The Homer boys and girls cross country teams lost to Christian Brothers Academy on Wednesday. 

This was Homer’s first race of the season.

“We lost both races, but both the boys and girls ran really well,” said Homer Head Coach Jim Baldwin. “For many of them this was their first taste of cross country and they were very inexperienced and nervous.  Many of them had never run a race of this length before. So even though they lost the race on points, they did a tremendous job and ran really well.” 

According to coach Baldwin, the races took place at Longbranch Park in Liverpool, and were shortened to 2.5 miles instead of 3.1 miles due to construction. 

Here are some Homer highlights from yesterday’s races: 

Homer Boys

  • Matthew Fish finished 3rd with a time of 16:35.6
  • Christopher Boylan came in 4th with a time of 17:50.5
  • Anderson Lowell placed 7th with a time of 19:39.4

Homer Girls

  • Anna Aldrich won 1st place with a time of 19:55.9
  • Emma Rahner came in 5th with a time of 21:11.6
  • Alyssa Swayze finished 7th with a time of 21:30.2

Varsity Cross Country: Cincinnatus vs. Faith Heritage & Fabius Pompey

The Cincinnatus Lions competed against Faith Heritage & Fabius Pompey at Highland Forest Wednesday afternoon. 

Here are some highlights from yesterday’s 3 mile races for both the Cincinnatus boys’ and girls’ cross country teams. (Note: these results and times are still unofficial according to Cincinnatus Coach Mark Morrell). 

Cincinnatus Boys

  • Elijah Fuller finished 5th with a time of 22:24. 

Cincinnatus Girls

  • Brooke Finn came in 4th with a time of 36:21.
  • Shannon Ryan placed 6th with a time of 36:23.
