Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 19th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

The McGraw Lady Eagles defeated Stockbridge Valley with a close score of 1-0 Monday afternoon. 

“I am really happy with how they finished the game,” said McGraw Head Coach Sara Yonta about her team. “They didn’t give up, and brought the intensity up.”

McGraw was led by Adrianna Stacconi (1 goal), Lexi McCall (1 assist), and Heather Magee (7 saves). 

Stacconi’s goal was her first goal of her varsity career.

“It feels really good honestly,” said Stacconi when asked how she felt about scoring her first varsity goal. “I’ve worked really hard for it.”

Stockbridge Valley was led by Abby Jacobs (3 saves). 

When asked about how things have been different this season in comparison to last season, Stacconi said, “our teamwork and communication all together. We have a really good team this year, and we are all really positive towards each other.” 

With this win, McGraw currently holds a 3-3-1 record. 

Up next, McGraw will play DeRuyter on the road this Thursday (September 22nd) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Volleyball: Cortland vs. Johnson City

The Cortland Lady Tigers beat Johnson City in three sets Monday night. With the win, Cortland improved their overall record to 2-3.

Cortland was led by Aliza McCormick (6 kills, 8 digs & 4 aces), Molly Steve (11 assists, 7 digs, 3 aces, 1 kill & 1 block), and Rileigh Madden (3 kills, 5 digs & 2 aces).

Cortland’s next match will be played against Auburn on the road tonight (September 20th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to an 0-5-1 record after losing to Cazenovia with a score of 1-5. 

Homer was led by Adia Henkel (1 goal), Mallory Kline (1 assist), and Aislynn Cobb (11 saves).

Cazenovia was led by Reid McMurtrie (1 goal & 1 assist), Hannah Adams (1 goal), Maya Gilmore (1 goal), Grace Kingsley (1 goal), Margaret Huftalen (1 goal), Isabella Fazio (1 assist), Meghan Mehlbaum (1 assist), and Madison Rothfeld (1 save). 

Homer will take on Weedsport at home today (September 20th) at 5pm.

Varsity Boys Golf: Cortland vs. Multiple Schools

The Cortland Purple Tigers tied for first place along with Oswego at “Battle Island” with a score of 211, according to Cortland Head Coach Nolan Sinclair. 

A total of eight teams (Cortland, Oswego, East Syracuse Minoa, Syracuse City, Jamesville-Dewitt, Fulton, Central Square & Auburn) competed in yesterday’s match.
