Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:
Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians lost a close game to Southern Cayuga on the road with a score of 0-1 Wednesday evening.
The game that was played was an IAC tie-breaker to determine which team would play in the IAC Championship game at Tompkins Cortland Community College this Saturday (October 15th).
According to Marathon Head Coach Aubrey Brown, Southern Cayuga’s goal was scored with about five minutes left in the first half by Wilson Majia.
Marathon goalkeeper Julian Spizzirri made a total of 3 saves in the game.
Up next, Marathon will wait to see who they will be facing in the first round of the Section IV Class D playoff tournament.
Varsity Field Hockey: Cortland vs. Weedsport

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost 0-1 against Weedsport Wednesday night. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 0-11-1.
The only goal of the game was scored by Weedsport’s Mackenzie Strong (assisted by Gabriella Jeffers).
Cortland goalie Ella Martin made 8 saves in the game, while Arieanna Giacolone recorded 1 save for Weedsport.
Cortland will now play their last scheduled game of the season on the road this upcoming Friday (October 14th) against East Syracuse Minoa at 6:45pm.
Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Morrisville-Eaton
The Homer Lady Trojans lost 1-7 against Morrisville-Eaton, bringing their overall record down to 1-11-1.
Homer was led by Mallory Kline (1 goal), Molly McMasters (1 assist), and Hannah Bouwens (16 saves).
Morrisville-Eaton was led by Kierra Merkle (3 goals), Molly Orth (2 goals), Julianna Tomcho (1 goal), Ella Griffin (1 goal), Olivia Fehlner (2 saves), and August Thompson (1 save).
This was Homer’s last scheduled game of the season.
Varsity Cross Country: Homer vs. Mexico
The Homer Trojans competed in a dual meet against Mexico Wednesday afternoon.
Here are some individual highlights of both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams (each race was 3.1 miles long):
Homer Boys
- Matt Fish finished 5th with a time of 19:18.
- Lowell Anderson came in 7th place with a time of 20:51.
- Christopher Boylan placed 8th with a time of 21:47.
Homer Girls
- Aldrich Anna finished in 2nd place with a time of 24:32.
- Brayden Partigianoni placed 3rd with a time of 26:00.
- Lydia Andre came in 4th place with a time of 26:07.
