The first part of a complex winter weather event will unfold across the area this afternoon and evening.

Clouds will be plentiful through the morning, but precipitation should hold off at least until the late morning. Most likely, precipitation will not start until the midday or early afternoon hours.

At first, precipitation may start with a brief period of freezing rain or sleet. Precipitation will quickly become mostly snow, or it may start out as snow from the start.

Periods of heavy snow are likely through the afternoon. A few pockets of freezing rain, sleet, or even plain rain will continue to be possible. Travel will likely become difficult.

The intensity of the precipitation should drop this evening, and there may even be some periods of where it ends. Most of what falls will still be snow, but the chances for mixed precipitation will increase. This will continue throughout the nighttime hours.

Snow accumulations by Friday morning may vary greatly across the area based on elevation. Most areas will probably see 4-7 inches, but higher terrain could see as much as 9 inches.

Temperatures will rise to near or just above freezing before the precipitation begins, with a few colder pockets remaining just below freezing.

This will generally hold true throughout the afternoon and into the evening, though most areas should rise a degree or two after sunset as precipitation intensities drop.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Friday: Snow likely, possibly mixing with rain at times. Morning in the low to mid 30s. Afternoon highs in the mid 30s

Saturday: Sun and clouds. Maybe a stray flurry. Morning lows in the mid 20s. Afternoon highs in the low 30s.

Sunday: Sun and clouds. A few flurries. Morning lows in the mid 10s. Afternoon highs in the low 30s.

Monday: Sun and clouds. A few flurries. Morning lows in the mid 10s. Afternoon highs in the upper 20s.
