The calendar may still be a couple days away from the official start of Winter, but today will be a classic Central New York winter day with plenty of clouds and some snow showers.

Only sporadic peeks of sunshine are expected today. Otherwise, the Great Lakes will supply plenty of cloud cover and the occasional snow shower. The best chances for snow will be early this morning and again later in the afternoon.

Tonight, the snow will increase in coverage, but should not be too heavy. The best chances for accumulations will be over the northern hills as some lake effect off Lake Ontario sinks southward. Only a couple inches are expected at most.

Winds will be from the west-northwest at near or just over 10 mph. Gusts could approach 30 mph, especially during the midday hours.

Wind speeds will drop under 10 mph late this afternoon and evening as winds jog a bit more northerly, resulting in the increase in snow showers.

Afternoon high temperatures will stick within a couple of degrees on either side of 30 degrees. Evening temperatures will slide back into the mid 20s with overnight lows in the low 20s.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Tuesday: Mostly cloudy. Maybe an early flurry. Morning lows in the low 20s. Afternoon highs in the upper 20s.

Wednesday: Sun filtering through thickening overcast. Morning lows near 10. Afternoon highs in the mid 30s.

Thursday: Windy with early snow turning to rain. Morning lows in the upper 10s. Afternoon highs in the upper 30s.

Friday: Windy with a little early rain, then periods of snow, some heavy. Morning temperatures in the low 40s. Afternoon temperatures dropping sharply through the 30s and 20s.
