An impressive and strengthening storm system will lift into the Upper Great Lakes today, spreading its influence far east and into our area.

The morning hours will be cloudy and mainly quiet. Precipitation will begin to arrive during the late morning and midday hours from the south.

Initially, much of the precipitation will be snow with some pockets of freezing rain. Lower elevations will quickly change over to plain rain, while higher elevations remain snow for longer. By the mid to late afternoon, most areas should be seeing just plain rain.

Snow accumulations will be limited to a light coating over lower elevations to perhaps an inch or two over the hilltops. Most roads should have minor or no travel concerns, but a few rural roads in the higher elevations may become difficult for a time.

Steady southeast winds will blow with speeds up to 10 mph through the daytime hours. These winds will help push temperatures in the mid and perhaps upper 30s this afternoon.

The wind will increase sharply this evening with speeds of 15-20 mph. Wind gusts may exceed 50 mph for the northern hilltops, while the rest of the county sees gusts of 40-50 mph.

Periods of rain will continue into the evening and overnight. Some of the rain may fall heavily at times. Coupled with snowmelt, this may result in some ponding in poor drainage areas and rises on small streams.

Temperatures will continue to rise during the night, with evening temperatures in the low 40s and overnight temperatures in the mid 40s.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Friday: Morning rain showers, turning to a period of snow and slick roads as temperatures drop sharply. Morning temperatures in the upper 40s. Afternoon temperatures dropping through the 30s and 20s.

Saturday: Windy. Scattered snow showers possible with localized light accumulations. Blowing and drifting snow. Morning lows in the mid 0s. Afternoon highs in the mid 10s.

Sunday: Snow showers likely with some accumulation. Blowing and drifting snow. Morning lows in the mid 0s. Afternoon highs in the upper 10s.

Monday: A few snow showers. Otherwise, just cloudy and not as windy. Morning lows in the low 0s. Afternoon highs in the low 20s.
