Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday's events:
Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Central Square & Auburn
The Cortland Tigers competed in a three-way dual meet against Central Square and Auburn on Wednesday.
The Cortland boys team lost 45-90 against Central Square, and lost 54-63 against Auburn.
The Cortland girls team lost 33-98 against Central Square, and lost 46-88 against Auburn.
Here are some highlights from both Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:
Cortland Boys
- Iniko Abani won 1st place in both the 110 meter high hurdles (Time - 17.8) and the high jump event (Result - 5’4”). He also placed 3rd in the 200 meter run (Time - 24.8)
- Jack Phelan got 2nd place in both the 100 meter dash (Time - 11.8) and the long jump event (Result - 17’9”)
- Iniko Abani, Austin Lind, Logan Griffin, and Jack Phelan came in 2nd in the 4x100 meter relay (Time - 46.9)
- Spenser Dodds came in 2nd in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:07.9)
- Spenser Dodds, Brady Pennock, Feodor Kalytyuk, and Marshall Egnor placed 3rd in the 4x400 meter relay (Time - 4:04.5)
- Bryan Honan placed 2nd in both the shot put event (Result - 40’2.5”) and the discus throw (Result - 137’11.5”)
- Duncan Harbin got 3rd place in the shot put event (Result - 39’5”)
Cortland Girls
- Campbell Bush won 1st place in the 100 meter high hurdles (Time - 17.6)
- Bailey Dintino got 2nd place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.7)
- Ruby Mullally placed 2nd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 5:47.3)
- Campbell Bush, Bailey Dintino, Maude Terwilliger, and Ashley Merritt placed 2nd in the 4x100 meter relay (Time - 55.2)
- Sarah Williams placed 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 85.7)
- Nellie Lucas came in 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 22’5”)
- Rileigh Madden got 2nd place in the pole vault event (Result - 7’0”)
- Maude Terwilliger came in 3rd in the triple jump event (Result - 28’2.75)
Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Christian Brothers Academy (CBA)
The Homer Trojans competed in a dual meet against Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) Wednesday afternoon.
The Homer boys team beat Moravia with a team score of 74-55; and the Homer girls team defeated CBA with a team score of 84-46.
Here are some highlights from both Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:
Homer Boys
- Jonah Campos won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 41’0.5”) and the discus throw (Result - 98’10”). Campos’ shot put throw was a personal best
- Levi Guay won 1st place in the 110 meter hurdles (Time - 20.1). He also placed 2nd in the pole vault event (Result - 6’6”) and came in 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 72.9)
- Liam O’Brien won 1st place in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 6:12.2). He also got 2nd place in the 3,200 (Time - 13:12.9)
- Caleb Ficchi won 1st place in the pole vault event (Result - 7’6”)
- Damian Brown won 1st place in the 3,200 meter run (Time -12:15.0). His time which qualifies him for Sectionals
- Nick Costa, Jonah Campos, Anderson Lowell, and Gabe Austin won 1st place in the 4x100 meter relay with a combined time of 49.2 seconds
- Orion Bennett (2:34.8), Liam O’Brien (2:55.2), Aidan Small (2:52.2), and Damian Brown (2:46.9) won 1st place in the 4x800 relay (Combined Time - 11:08.9)
- Oliver Kida placed 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles (Time - 20.3), the long jump (Result - 16’8”), and the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 71.4)
- Logan Darling got 2nd place in the discus throw (Result - 93’4”) and the shot put (35’ 5.5”)
- Aidan Small came in 2nd in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 6:23.7). He also placed 3rd in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 13:59.2)
- Anderson Lowell placed 2nd in the 200 meter run (Time - 24.5). His time qualifies him for Sectionals
- Dylan Pittsley got 2nd place in the triple jump (Result - 32’0.75”)
- Garrett Berthelot placed 3rd in the 110 meter hurdles (Time - 23.8)
- Nick Costa came in 3rd in the 200 meter run (Time - 24.9 seconds). his time qualifies him for Sectionals
Homer Girls
- Ingrid Aagaard won 1st place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.1), 200 meter run (Time - 27.9) and the 400 meter run (Time - 61.9). Her 400 meter run time broke the freshman class record.
- Cammy Cole won 1st place in the triple jump (Result - 30’6”) and the high jump (Result - 4’0”). She also placed 2nd in the pole vault event (Result - 6’6”).
- Jane Gugerty won 1st place in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 18.4) as well as in the pole vault (Result - 7’0”).
- Hannah Bouwens won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 23’10”) and the discus throw (Result - 69’3”).
- Natalie Funk, Cece Berkey, Taylor Chisholm, and Maliyah Parente won 1st place in the 4x100 meter relay (Time - 60.9)
- Camdyn Cole (70.2), Natalie Funk (72.8), Sophie Kennett (77.5), and Ingrid Aagaard (66.7) won 1st place in the 4x400 meter relay (Time - 4:47.1)
- Sophie Kennett placed 2nd in the long jump (Result - 12’3”), the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 19.2), and in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 79.8).
- Ellie Ensign placed 2nd in the shot put event (Result - 20’9”). She also placed 3rd in the discus throw (Result - 61’6”)
- Maggie Mahunik placed 2nd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 7:08.3)
- Haley Tucker came in 2nd in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 13:33.1)
- Brynn Loomis got 2nd place in the discus throw (Result - 67’10”)
- Amelia Wagner placed 3rd in both the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 90.4) and the 3,000 meter run (Time - 14:46.6)
- Natalie Funk placed 3rd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 14.1)
- Remy Jensen came in 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 20’8”)
Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Oswego (Double-Header)
The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Oswego in both games of a double-header at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Wednesday evening.
With these two wins, Cortland improved their unbeaten record to 8-0.

The Cortland Lady Tigers fell to an overall record of 5-2 after losing to Solvay with a score of 0-5 Wednesday afternoon.

Solvay was led by Gianna D'Eredita (1 run & 1 hit), Rachel Willsey (1 run), Jenna Wing (1 run, 2 hits, 1 RBI) & 12 strikeouts thrown), Nevaeh Baker (1 run & 1 hit), Hannah Haase (1 run).
According to the Cortland athletics website, the Lady Tigers are now scheduled to play in a tournament at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary School on Saturday (April 22nd). First game starts at 11am.
