The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated the McGraw Lady Eagles with a close score of 15-11 at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Friday evening.

With this result, Marathon improved to an overall record of 3-4; while McGraw fell to a 1-5 record.

Marathon started things off well with an 11-1 lead after the top of the third inning. McGraw then rallied back to score a combined 10 runs in the bottom of the third, fourth and fifth innings.

However, the Lady Olympians were able to hold McGraw off in the last two innings of the game to come up with the win.

“We played sloppy after we got a big lead,” said Marathon head coach Jamie Bush after the game. “Pitchers that came in weren’t throwing as great as they needed to. Unfortunately, we needed them to pitch well tonight, because we have a tournament tomorrow (April 22nd) at home. Our starting pitcher (Izabella Conklin) had to pitch more innings than I was hoping for tonight.”

“McGraw played really well,” added coach Bush. “They were short handed, but they played really well.”

McGraw’s runs were scored by Leah Terwilliger (2 runs), Hanna Wilson (2 runs), Haylee Bassett (2 runs), Katelynn Millard (2 runs), Josslyn Eaton (1 run), Camdyn Caperton (1 run), and Kirsten Tetreault (1 run).

Up next, Marathon is scheduled to host a tournament at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary School on Saturday (April 22nd). McGraw, Cincinnatus, and Cortland will be playing in the tournament as well. The first game is scheduled to start at 11:30am.

Note: Coach Bush contacted The Cortland Voice to say that the tournament games were moved from 9am to 11:30 am due to heavy rains the previous night.

“We should be able to compete with all the teams that will be there,” stated coach Bush. “Cortland will be the team to beat. I think they have the best pitcher out of the group right now, and Cincinnatus is going to be tough this year.”
