Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Olympians played against Groton Friday afternoon. Marathon lost the match with a close score of 197-196 (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Lady Olympians played against Moravia Friday afternoon at the Fillmore Golf Club. 

Marathon recorded a total team score of 238. With an incomplete team, Fillmore was not able to record a team score.

The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated the McGraw Lady Eagles with a close score of 15-11 at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex Friday evening.

Marathon is scheduled to host a tournament at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary School on Saturday (April 22nd). McGraw, Cincinnatus, and Cortland will be playing in the tournament as well. The first game started at 11:30am. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Brookfield

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions won 8-5 against Brookfield Friday afternoon in order to improve to a 3-1 record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Gabby Taylor (2 RBI’s), Kayle Brenchley (2 runs, 2 hits & 4 strikeouts thrown), Jamber Aiken (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Piper Landers (2 runs, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Lucy Finch (2 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Payton Gerrard (1 hit & 4 strikeouts thrown), and Madison Stover (1 run & 1 hit). 

Note: Stats for Brookfield were not made available by the time this article was written. 

Cincinnatus is scheduled to play in a tournament at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary School on Saturday (April 22nd). McGraw, Marathon, and Cortland will be playing in the tournament as well. The first game started at 11:30am.

The Marathon Olympians fell to a 1-8 record after losing to Moravia with a score of 3-6 Friday afternoon. 

Marathon’s runs were scored by Tristin Byron (1 run), Camdyn Kashuba (1 run), and Jeffery Daugherty (1 run). 

Moravia’s runs were scored by Eli Landis (2 runs), Brayden Mason (2 runs), Luke Landis (1 run), and Dillon Palmer (1 run). 

Marathon pitcher Zachary Birdsall threw 7 strikeouts in the game, while Eli Landis and Kaiden Sharpsteen combined to throw 7 strikeouts. 

Up next, Marathon will play Newark Valley on the road this upcoming Monday (April 24th) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. New Hartford

The Homer Trojans fell to a 2-6 record after losing a close game against New Hartford with a score of 8-10. 

Homer was led by Reid Partis (3 goals & 1 assist), Hunter Riehlman (2 goals), Evan Butts (1 goal & 2 assists), Mitchell Riter (1 goal), Daniel Stiles (1 goal), Wyatt Wilbur (1 assist), and Benjamin Bradshaw (15 saves). 

New Hartford was led by Dan Friedel (3 goals & 2 assists), Mateo Ripa (3 goals), Dylan Zayacheck (2 goals & 1 assist), Sawyer Kramer (1 goal), Anthony Falvo (1 goal), and Jake Garcia (2 assists). 

Homer is now scheduled to host Jordan-Elbridge on Tuesday (April 25th) at Homer High School at 7pm. 

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Teams (Tioga Twisted Relays)

The Marathon Olympians competed in the Tioga Twisted Relays at Tioga High School Friday afternoon.  

Here are some individual highlights from both Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams: 

Marathon Boys

  • Andrew Edsall finished 2nd in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”). He also placed 3rd in the 1,600 meter run (Time - 5:15.85) and came in 5th in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:20.33). 

Marathon Girls

  • Catherine Newkirk placed 2nd in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 19.59). She also came in 3rd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 14.26) and tied for 3rd in the high jump (Result - 4’4”)
  • Shaelin Phillips finished 2nd in the 1,500 meter run (Time - 6:06.12)
  • Abigail Trabucco placed 2nd in the 400 meter run (Time - 1:09.67)
  • Kennedy Eaton came in 3rd in the 400 meter run (Time - 1:10.55). 
  • Addison Oram won 1st place in the high jump event (Result - 4’8”) and in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”). She also placed 3rd in the 200 meter dash (Time - 29.58)

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Teams (DeStefano Invitational)

The Cortland Tigers competed in the DeStefano Invitational Friday afternoon.  

Here are some individual highlights from both Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams: 

Cortland Boys

  • Duncan Harbin placed 3rd in the shot put event (Result - 40’06”). His result qualifies him for the sectional qualifier
  • Bryan Honan came in 2nd in the discus throw (Result - 123’09”). His result qualifies him for the sectional qualifier
  • Cortland’s 4 x 100 meter relay team (Iniko Abani, Austin Lind, Logan Griffin, Jack Phelan) qualified for the state qualifier after recording a time of 46.98

Cortland Girls

  • Campbell Bush placed 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles (Time - 18.03). With her time, she has qualified for the sectional qualifier. 
  • Rileigh Madden qualified for the sectional qualifier after recording a result of 8’0”
