Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 26th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. East Syracuse Minoa & Jamesville-Dewitt

The Cortland Tigers competed in a three-way dual meet against East Syracuse Minoa (ESM) and Jamesville-Dewitt (J-D) on Wednesday. 

The Cortland boys’ team lost to ESM with a team score of 21-114, and lost to J-D with a score of 26-113. 

The Cortland girls team lost to ESM with a team score of 10-130, and lost to J-D with a score of 43-91. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Spenser Dodds came in 3rd in the 400 meter run (Time - 56.9)
  • Jack Phelan placed 3rd in the 200 meter run (Time - 24.4)
  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in both the shot put even (Result - 43’10.5”) and the discus throw (Result - 132’0.5”)
  • Michael Dearie came in 3rd in the discus throw (Result - 106’9”)

Cortland Girls

  • Bailey Dintino finished 3rd in both the 100 meter run (Time - 13.6) and the long jump event (Result - 14’1.5”)
  • Sarah Williams placed 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 1:21.5)
  • Rileigh Madden placed 3rd in the pole vault event (Result - 7’0”)

Varsity Track & Field: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Trojans competed in a dual meet against Westhill on Wednesday. 

The Homer boys’ team lost with a team score of 38-98, and the Homer girls’ team lost 22-115. 

Here are some highlights from both the Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Oliver Kida won 1st place in both the 110 meter hurdles (Time - 18.9) and the long jump event (Result - 17’2”). He also placed 2nd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 71.0).  All three of his performances were personal bests, and his long jump result qualifies him for Sectionals
  • Jonah Campos won 1st place in both the discus throw event (Result - 119’4”) and the shot put event (Result - 40’0”). His discus throw was a personal best
  • Logan Darling placed 2nd in the discus throw (Result - 100’11”) as well as in the shot put (Result - 37’5”). His shot put performance was a season best
  • Anderson Lowell came in 3rd in the 200 meter run (Time - 24.9), the shot put event (Result - 35’7.5”), and the discus throw (Result - 93’0”). All three of his performances were personal bests
  • Gabe Austin got 3rd place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 12.6)
  • Tristyn Henkel placed 3rd in the 400 meter run (Time - 63.0)
  • Levi Guay came in 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles (Time - 71.7). His 400 meter hurdle performance was a personal best
  • Orion Bennett came in 3rd in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:40.8)
  • Liam O’Brien placed 3rd in the 3,200 meter run (Time - 12:22.5). His time was a personal best. 
  • Caleb Ficchi placed 3rd in the pole vault event (Result - 8’0”)

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagard won 1st place in the 200 meter run (Time - 27.8). She also finished 2nd in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.3)
  • Camdyn Cole won 1st place in the triple jump (Result - 31’8.5”). She also got 3rd place in the 100 meter dash (Time - 13.8). Her 100 meter dash time was a season best
  • Amelia Wagner won 1st place in the 3,000 meter run (Time - 15:11.5)
  • Sophie Kennett came in 3rd in both the 400 meter hurdles (Result - 81.3) and the long jump event (Result - 12’10”)
  • Remy Jensen finished 3rd in the discus throw (Result - 66’7”). Her throw was a personal best.

Varsity Boys Golf: McGraw vs. Cincinnatus

The Cortland County rivalry matchup between the McGraw Eagles and the Cincinnatus Lions ended up with McGraw winning with an overall team score of 255-298. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Groton

The McGraw Eagles lost a close game against Groton with a score of 7-12 at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Park Wednesday evening. 

McGraw was led by Jaydon Bassett (2 runs, 3 hits & 4 RBI’s), Blair Mulcahy (1 run, 2 hits & 7 strikeouts thrown), Calob Sutton (3 runs & 1 hit), Riley VanLiew (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Brennan Wilson (3 hits & 1 RBI), Lucas Monroe (1 hit), and Blake Bergey (1 strikeout thrown).

Note: individual stats for Groton were not made available by the time this article was written. 

With this loss, McGraw has fallen to a 5-5 record. 

Up next, McGraw will host Brookfield at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Friday (April 28th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Trojans fell to an overall record of 3-5 following a tough 2-8 loss against Westhill on the road.

Homer was led by Eli McMahon (1 run), Graydon Hickey (1 run), Maddox Johnson (1 hit & 2 strikeouts thrown), Mitchell Earle (1 RBI), Tristan Allen (1 strikeout thrown), and Graydon Hickey (1 strikeout thrown).

Westhill was led by Taden Chester (2 runs), Luke Pickett (1 run), Anthony Pagano (1 run), Michael Madigan III (1 run & 11 strikeouts thrown), Trey Dillabough (1 run, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Dominic Zawadzki (3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Aiden Ryan (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), and Anthony Sampo (1 hit). 

Homer’s next game will be played on the road against Phoenix today (Thursday, April 27th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost 5-23 to Union Springs Wednesday afternoon. With this loss, Marathon now holds a 4-7 record. 

Marathon was mainly led by Marissa Allen (3 hits & 3 runs) and Ellery Ensign (2 hits & 3 RBI's).

According to Marathon head coach Jamie Bush, “Ensign took the circle tonight, but Union Springs’ five seniors and their team hit the ball well, and we made some errors that led to big innings.”

Marathon is now scheduled to host Southern Cayuga at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary School today (Thursday, April 27th) at 4:30pm.
