Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 27th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer Trojans fell to a 3-7 overall record after a tough loss against Marcellus with a score of 2-10 Thursday night. 

Homer was led by Hunter Riehlman (1 goal), Michael Stiles (1 goal), Reid Partis (1 assist), Daniel Stiles (1 assist), and Benjamin Bradshaw (12 saves). 

Marcellus was led by Adam Rayfield (3 goals & 4 assists), Doryn LeClair (2 goals & 2 assists), Nick Rayfield (3 goals), Chris Doshna (2 goals), Jimmy Cox (2 assists), and Quenten Polkowski  (8 saves). 

Homer will now host a Cortland County rivalry game against Cortland at Homer high school this Saturday (April 29th) at 2pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Fulton

The Cortland Purple Tigers won a close game against Fulton with a final score of 13-12 at home Thursday night. With this win, Cortland improved to a 5-6 record. 

Cortland was led by Finn Thomas (3 goals), Ryan Kline (2 goals), Benjamin McGrath (4 goals & 4 assists), Bodey McGrath (1 goal & 2 assists), Mark Darling (1 goal), Jon Henry (2 goals & 1 assist), and Declan Vail (10 saves). 

Note: individual stats for Fulton were not made available by the time this article was written. 

Up next, Cortland will play a Cortland County rivalry game against Homer at Homer high school this Saturday (April 29th) at 2pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a tough game at home against Marcellus with a final score of 6-18. With this loss, Homer has fallen to a 2-6 record. 

Homer was led by Ella Spanbauer (4 goals), Maria Partis (1 goal), Lilly Sorenson (1 goal), Caitlin McCloy (6 saves), and Aislynn Cobb (2 saves).

Marcellus was led by Cece Powell (7 goals), Claire Card (4 goals), Adelle Aupperle (2 goals), Avery Shute (1 goal), Samantha Buff (1 goal), Janie Powell (1 goal), Amanda Barbaro (1 goal), and Janie Powell (4 saves). 

Homer will now look forward to taking on Indian River at home this Saturday (April 29th) at 12pm. 

Varsity Girls Golf: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools

The Marathon Lady Olympians competed against Watkins Glen and Lansing Thursday afternoon. Marathon won the three-way match with a score of 211. Lansing came in second with a team score of 223, and Watkins Glen placed third with a score of 303. (Reminder: the lowest score in golf wins).

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers lost 1-4 against Central Square on the road Thursday evening. 

Cortland was led by Mallory Turner (1 run & 1 hit), Aliza McCormick (1 hit & 1 RBI), Claire Turner (1 hit), Kaitlyn Egolf (1 hit), Madison Thompson (1 hit), and Brenna Hogan (4 strikeouts thrown).

Central Square was led by Savannah Staats (2 runs & 2 hits), Natalie Bush (1 run & 1 hit), Lily Fortino (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Jamielyn Kelley (2 hits & 1 RBI), Kayla Tarquinio (1 hit), and Caytlin Redeye (11 strikeouts thrown).

With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 8-3. 

Cortland’s next game will be played at Onondaga Community College against Solvay today (Friday, April 28th) at 4:30pm.

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to a 3-6 record after losing a tough game to Phoenix with a score of 6-20. 

Homer was led by Allyson Verfuss (1 run & 1 hit), Catherine Apker (1 run, 2 hits & 1 RBI), Jenna Henderson (1 run, 1 hit & 4 strikeouts thrown), Lyla Read (1 run & 1 hit), Alexandria Kellaway (2 runs & 2 hits), Cecelia Rappleyea (1 hit), and Karigan Quaile (1 strikeout thrown). 

Phoenix was led by Meghan Clothier (2 runs, 2 hits & 4 RBI’s), Lily Amidon (2 runs, 3 hits, 3 RBI’s & 9 strikeouts thrown), Bailey Hager (3 runs, 1 homerun, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Mia Graham (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Maddie DiGiovanni (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Emily Danquer (3 runs), Hannah Morrison (3 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Giana Ende (3 runs, 2 hits & 1 RBI), and Kendall Barnes (1 run).

Homer is now scheduled to host Marcellus at Homer high school on Tuesday (May 2nd) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost to Southern Cayuga with a final score of 0-2 Thursday afternoon. With this loss, Marathon now holds a 4-8 record. 

“We played a great game today,” said Marathon head coach Jamie Bush. “Marissa Allen was huge in the outfield as was Melodie Sutton, Ashlynn Layton and Jazlynn Howe with big catches of their own. Izabella Conklin pitched well against a team that scored 17 on us in game one.” 

“We are finally making better choices and have a better understanding of the game,” added coach Bush. “Players have built trust in each other and are having fun. Now we just need some wins to make it back to the postseason. The next two weeks will be a battle, but I feel we are where we need to be after 12 games as a young team.”

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost 0-9 against Brookfield, falling to an overall record of 2-6 Thursday afternoon.

According to the McGraw Athletic’s page, the Lady Eagles are now scheduled to play a double-header against Otselic Valley on Saturday (April 29th) at 4pm.

Homer pitchers Mitchell Earle, Tristan Allen, and Noah Young combined for a no-hitter game from the mound to beat Phoenix 10-1 Thursday evening. With the win, Homer’s overall record is 4-5. 

Homer was led by Mitchell Earle (1 run, 3 hits, 1 RBI & 10 strikeouts thrown), Maddox Johnson (2 runs, 3 hits & 1 RBI), Noah Young (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 strikeout thrown), Graydon Hickey (1 run, 2 hits & 2 RBI’s), Jeffrey Stauber (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Anderson Read (1 run & 1 RBI), Peter Verfuss (1 run & 1 hit), Andrew Kline (1 hit & 1 RBI), Tyler VanEtten (1 hit & 1 RBI), Eli McMahon (1 hit & 1 RBI), and Tristan Allen (1 run & 2 strikeouts thrown).

Phoenix’s only run of the game was scored by Juan Gonzalez. Phoenyx starting pitcher Tyler Bertrand threw 2 strikeouts and Donovan Manley threw 2 strikeouts as well. 

Up next, Homer will host Marcellus at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex on Tuesday (May 2nd) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Tioga Senior

The Marathon Olympians lost against Tioga Senior, with a score of 0-10. 

Marathon was mainly led by Tristin Byron (1 hit), Eli Hoyt (1 hit), Jonathan Forrest (1 hit), and Camdyn Kashuba (2 strikeouts thrown). 

Tioga Senior was mainly led by Ethan Perry (1 run, 2 hits & 4 RBI’s) and Drew Macumber (2 runs & 3 hits).

“I was very happy with the way we played today,” said Marathon head coach Bryan Hoyt. “We held them tight through 5 (innings), but made a few mistakes in the 6th and that hurt. But the boys never stopped fighting. I thought Camdyn Kashuba pitched a great game. It was his first Varsity start and to go 5 innings and only allow 2 runs against a team like that is impressive.” 

With the loss, Marathon’s record is 1-10. 

Marathon is scheduled to play host Union Springs today (Friday, April 28th) at 4:30pm.
