Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (April 29th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Saturday’s events:

Varsity Track & Field: Marathon vs. Multiple Schools

The Marathon Olympians competed in a meet at Moravia High School on Saturday against multiple schools. 

The Marathon boys’ team finished 8th out of 8 competing teams, while the Marathon girls’ team placed 4th out of  9 competing teams

Here are some highlights from both the Marathon boys’ and girls’ teams (Note: Not all individual results from running events have been record yet):

Marathon Boys

  • Conor Holland finished 2nd in the high jump (Result - 5’08”)
  • Justin Baez placed 5th in the shot put (Result - 29’02.25”)
  • Andrew Edsall placed 6th in the pole vault event (Result - 7’06”)

Marathon Girls

  • Abigail Trabucco won 1st place in the pole vault (Result - 7’06”)
  • Megan Howard came in 3rd in the discus throw event (Result - 66’11”). She also finished 5th in the shot put (Result - 21’07.50”)
  • Catherine Newkirk got 4th place in the triple jump event (Result - 30’10”)
  • Sophia Hansen placed 6th in the triple jump (Result - 26’06”)
  • Addison Oram finished 2nd in the high jump (Result - 4’06”)

Varsity Track & Field: Cortland vs. Multiple Schools

The Cortland Purple Tigers competed in a meet on Saturday against multiple schools. 

Here are some highlights from both the Cortland boys’ and girls’ teams:

Cortland Boys

  • Bryan Honan won 1st place in the shot put event (Result - 44’2”). He also placed 4th in the discus throw (Result - 132’2). Both his throws qualify him for the state qualifier. His shot put throw result was a personal best. 
  • Jack Phelan placed 6th in the long jump (Result - 19’7.25”). His jump qualified him for sectionals.
  • Austin Lind recorded a sectional qualifying time of 12.47 in the 100 meter dash. His time was a personal record. 
  • Brady Pennock recorded a personal record time of 4:51.17 in the 1 mile run. His time qualified him for sectionals.
  • Spenser Dodds recorded a sectional qualifying time of 2:08.49 in the 800 meter run. 
  • Duncan Harbin threw a 41’1” in the shot put event. His throw was a personal best, and qualified him for the State Qualifier. 

Cortland Girls

  • Bailey Dintino ran in the 100 meter dash and recorded a personal record time of 13.75. Her time qualified her for sectionals. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Cortland

The Homer Trojans won their county rivalry game against Cortland with a score of 14-8 on Saturday. 

With this result, Homer improved to a 4-7 record; while Cortland fell to a record of 5-7. 

Homer was led by Hunter Riehlman (4 goals), Daniel Stiles (3 goals & 2 assists), Reid Partis (3 goals & 1 assist), Cooper Swartz (2 goals), Mitch Riter (1 goal & 3 assists), Evan Butts (1 goal), Michael Stiles (2 assists), Alex Votra (1 assist), and Ben Bradshaw (15 saves). 

Cortland was led by Ryan Kline (4 goals), Benjamin McGrath (3 goals & 2 assists), Jon Henry (1 goal), Mark Darling (1 assist), Luke Darling (1 assist), and Declan Vail (12 saves). 

Up next, Homer will play LaFayette on the road this Thursday (May 4th) at 5pm; while Cortland hosts East Syracuse Minoa at Cortland high school on Tuesday (May 2nd) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. New Hartford

The Cortland Lady Purple Tigers lost a close game against New Hartford with a score of 5-8, making them fall to an overall record of 2-7. 

Cortland was led by Aubree Larkin (2 goals & 1 assist), Valerosa Gambitta (2 goals), Olivia Magin (1 goal), and Hayden Bulger (11 saves). 

New Hartford was led by Kyle Thomas (3 goals), Kate Elbrecht (2 goals), Bella Kolb (2 goals), Sophia Campola (3 assists), Ella Greico (1 goal), Leah Hilton (1 assist), and Emily Picolla (4 saves). 

Cortland’s next game will be played on the road on Thursday (May 4th) against Oswego at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Indian River

The Homer Lady Trojans lost 6-19 against Indian River Saturday afternoon 

Note: stats of the game were not made available by the time this article was written. 

With this loss, Homer has fallen to a 2-7 record. 

Homer is now scheduled to host Chittenango at Homer high school on Tuesday (May 2nd) at 6:30pm.
