The Homer Lady Trojans fell short in the highest scoring game of the 2023 spring season in section III against Cazenovia Thursday evening.

Homer lost the game with a score of 37-41 at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex.

Not only was this the highest scoring game of the season in section III; but it also almost broke the New York State high school record from the 2017 season, where Barack Obama School for Social Justice (Palisade Prep) defeated Gorton (Yonkers) with a score 46-36.

Even though yesterday's game was played during a light rainfall, it ultimately made the turf field difficult to play on.

“Our normal game field is not on turf,” said Homer Athletic Director Todd Lisi. “It was very different for both teams. The Lumber Yard is great, but it is built for baseball. They use moveable mounds for softball. This was just the perfect storm for both teams not being used to playing on a turf field. The score would have been much different had we played on our home field.”

Homer was led by Catherine Apker (6 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Alexandria Kellaway (1 homerun, 5 total runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Jenna Henderson (3 runs, 1 hit, 2 RBI’s & 1 strikeout thrown), Melina Hage (5 runs, 1 ht & 2 RBI’s), Karigan Quaile (3 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Cecelia Rappleyea (5 runs & 1 hit), Allyson Verfuss (4 runs, 1 hit & 2 RBI’s), Lyla Read (3 runs & 2 RBI’s), Khloe Young (2 runs, 1 hit & 3 RBI’s), and Kaylee Darling (1 run).

Cazenovia was led by Sophie Wilmot (7 runs, 1 hit, 4 RBI’s & 2 strikeouts thrown), Lucy Bliss (5 runs & 2 RBI’s), Riley Newcomb (6 runs & 1 hit), Caitee Fenton (3 runs & 1 hit), Audrey Wells (6 runs & 1 RBI), Skylar Dannan (5 runs & 2 RBI’s), Mikayla Streator (3 runs, 2 RBI’s & 1 strikeout thrown), Abby Falso (4 runs & 1 RBI), and Cadence Walter (2 runs & 3 RBI’s).

Most runs were scored from wild pitches, which resulted in walks.
