Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 4th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Purple Tigers improved to a 6-8 record after winning at home against Oswego with a score of 9-5. 

Cortland was led by Benjamin McGrath (2 goals & 5 assists), Bodey McGrath (2 goals & 1 assist), Finn Thomas (2 goals & 1 assist), Ryan Kline (1 goal & 1 assist), Jon Henry (2 goals), and Declan Vail (6 saves). 

Oswego was led by Cooper Fitzgerald (2 goals & 2 assists), Logan Crannell (3 goals), and Mac Fitzgerald (13 saves). 

Up next, Cortland will play Fulton on Tuesday (May 8th) on the road at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. LaFayette

The Homer Trojans lost a tight game against LaFayette with a final score of 8-10. 

Homer was led by Hunter Riehlman (2 goals & 2 assists), Evan Butts (2 goals), Reid Partis (1 goal & 1 assist), Mitchell Riter (1 goal), Alexander Votra (1 goal), Wyatt Wilbur (1 goal), Daniel Stiles (1 assist), and Benjamin Bradshaw (13 saves).

LaFayette was led by Christian DeJoseph (5 goals & 1 assist), Bruce Benedict (2 goals & 2 assists), Chace Cogan (1 goal & 1 assist), Jameson Bucktooth (2 assists), Brett Bucktooth Jr (1 goal & 1 assist), Samuel McIntosh (1 goal), and Arrow Booth (14 saves). 

With this loss, Homer fell to a 4-8 record. 

Homer will now host Cazenovia at Homer high school this upcoming Tuesday (May 9th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Lady Tigers fell to an overall record of 2-8 after losing to Oswego with a score of 4-14 on the road. 

Cortland was led by Valerosa Gambitta (2 goals & 1 assist), Aubree Larkin (1 goal), Gabrielle Cranfield (1 goal), and Hayden Bulger (9 saves). 

Oswego was led by Amanda Connelly (2 goals & 1 assist), Peyton Bond (2 goals), Aliana DiBlasi (1 goal), Mia Fierro (6 goals & 2 assists), Kylie Fritton (2 goals & 2 assists), Alivia Michailidis (1 goal), Allyson Bruns (5 saves), and Makensie Sinclair (1 save).

Up next, Cortland will play East Syracuse Minoa at Cortland high school on Tuesday (May 9th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Cazenovia

The Homer Lady Trojans fell short in the highest scoring game of the 2023 spring season for section III against Cazenovia Thursday evening. Homer lost the game with a score of 37-41 at the Gutchess Lumber Sports Complex.

Not only was this the highest scoring game of the section III season, but it also almost broke the New York State high school record from the 2017 season; where Barack Obama School for Social Justice (Palisade Prep) defeated Gorton (Yonkers) with a score 46-36.

Homer’s next game will be played at Homer high school on Monday (May 8th) against Skaneateles. The game is scheduled to begin at 5pm. 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Groton

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost a close game against Groton with a score of 12-13. With this loss, McGraw now holds a 2-10 record. 

McGraw was led by Josslyn Eaton (5 runs, 3 hits, 1 RBI & 5 strikeouts thrown), Katelynn Millard (2 runs, 3 hits & 3 RBI’s), Leah Terwilliger (3 runs & 1 hit), Madison Sweeney (1 run), Hannah Wilson (1 hit & 3 RBI’s), Camdyn Caperton (1 hit), and Haylee Bassett (1 run, 2 hits & 5 RBI’s).

McGraw is now scheduled to host Cincinnatus today (May 5th) at 4:30pm.

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions fell to an 8-3 record after losing to Hamilton with a score of 7-9 Thursday evening.

Cincinnatus’ next game will be played on the road against McGraw today (May 5th) at 4:30pm.

The Homer Trojans lost 0-6 against Cazenovia, bringing their record down to 5-6 Thursday afternoon. 

“The boxscore says it all,” said Homer head coach Robert Nasiatka. “Tough to win a game when you are not hitting. Jack (Donlin) had his best stuff. Not overpowering but mixed it up well. We struggled defensively as well. Baseball is like that though. A really good pitcher can change a whole game. We are back at it next week. We will fix things.”

Homer’s Graydon Hickey recorded 3 strikeouts thrown. 

Cazenovia was led by Taven Reilley (2 hits), Jack Byrnes (1 run & 1 hit), Sully Clarke (1 run), Izaak Gilbert (1 run & 1 hit), Nico Segall (2 runs, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Jacob Szalach (1 run & 1 hit), and Jack Donlin (15 strikeouts thrown).

Up next, Homer will play Skaneateles on the road on Monday (May 8th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a tough game against Auburn with a score of 3-11, making them fall to an overall record of 9-4. 

Cortland was led by Andrew Partigianoni (1 run & 2 hits), Ethan Johnson (1 run & 1 hit), and Caden Albright (1 run & 1 hit). 

Auburn was led by Lucas West (2 runs, 3 hits, 1 RBI & 5 strikeouts thrown), Mac Maher (2 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Cooper Polcovich (1 run, 3 hits & 2 RBI’s), Steven Ambroggio (1 runs, 2 hits & 3 RBI’s), Jason Irwin (1 run, 1 hit & 1 RBI), Noah Morrison (2 runs & 1 hit), Dominic Stallone (1 run), Caden Becker (1 hit), Dominic Stallone (1 run), and Aiden Caputa (1 run), and Myles McBride (1 strikeout thrown).
