Local sex offender fails to report documents

A local sex offender was arrested on Thursday after he failed to report updated documents, according to a report.

The City of Cortland Police Department report stated that Daniel M. Gerhart, of Cortland, failed to “meet his obligations as outlined” by the New York State Sex Offender Registry.

Gerhart was convicted of possessing a sexual performance by a child in 2009 and failure to register as a sex offender in 2016 – both felonies. He is currently registered as a Level-2 sex offender.

Gerhart is now facing sex offender charges from Thursday’s arrest under the New York State Corrections Law, including:

  • Failure to provide a verification form
  • Failure to provide an updated photo
  • Failure to provide a change of address

Each of Gerhart’s charges are Class-D felonies, the report noted.

Gerhart was arraigned and sent to Cortland County Jail without bail. He is due to appear in city court at a later date.
