Varsity Track & Field: Local teams compete in state qualifiers (results & highlights included)

Local Cortland County teams competed in their respective New York State qualifier meets over the past two days (Wednesday & Thursday). 

Cortland, Homer, and Cincinnatus had athletes competing in the Section III state qualifiers, while Marathon had athletes competing in the Section IV state qualifiers. 

Here are the results as well as highlights from each Cortland County team: 

Cortland

Junior Jack Phelan placed 2nd overall in the triple jump event. Amir Taylor of Syracuse Academy of Science won first place after jumping a personal record of 44’1.25”. 

According to Cortland coach Luke Schweider, the team got a call Saturday morning saying that Taylor will not be attending the state championship meet. Because of this, Phelan will now be representing Section III Division 2 in the triple jump event at the state championships in Taylor’s place. 

The New York State Championship meet is scheduled to take place at Middletown High School on Friday (June 9th) and Saturday (June 10th). Click here for more information on the championship meet.

  • Jack Phelan placed 2nd in the triple jump event (Result - 42’11.5”)
  • Iniko Abani placed 3rd in the high jump (Result - 5’10”). 
  • Bryan Honan got 4th place in the discus throw (Result - 133’4”). He also placed 19th in the shot put event (Result - 40’1.25”)
  • Duncan Harbin placed 5th in the shot put event (Result - 44’6”). He also came in 11th place in the discus throw (Result - 120’9”)
  • Cortland’s 4x100m boys relay team (Iniko Abani, Austin Lind, Tyler O'Brien & Jack Phelan) finished in 9th place with a combined time of 45.65 

Homer

The Homer Trojans had a total of six athletes competing in the Section III New York State qualifier meet on Thursday. 

According to Homer coach George Schneider, none of Homer’s athletes were able to qualify for the New York State championship meet.

  • Ingrid Aagaard came in 2nd place in the 800 meter run (Time - 2:22.98). Her time was a personal best. 
  • Logan Darling got 5th place in the discus throw (Result - 128’3”)
  • The 4x100 girls relay team (Ingrid Aagaard, Camdyn Cole, Jane Gugerty & Natalie Funk) finished 8th overall with a time of 54.12. 
  • Jonah Campos placed 10th in the shot put event (Result - 42’10.25”). His throw was a personal best. 

Cincinnatus

Senior Justice Crane was the only Cincinnatus athlete that competed in the Section III State qualifier meet. Crane ended up placing 5th in the high jump event after recording a jump of 4’11”. 

According to Cincinnatus coach Mark Morrell, Crane’s jump did not qualify her for the New York State championship meet. 

Marathon

Conor Holland finished in 4th place in the Pentathlon event. The Pentathlon is an event in which each participating athlete competes in five different events. Their overall standing is based on where they placed in each of the five events. 

Holland finished 1st in the Pentathlon’s 1,500 meter run (Time - 4:39.53), came in 7th place in the Pentathlon’s 110 meter hurdles (Time - 17.99), got 2nd place in the Pentathlon’s high jump (Result - 5’11.75”), placed 3rd in the long jump (Result - 18’11.50”), and came in 5th in the Pentathlon’s shot put event (Result - 33’11”).

Abigail Trabucco tied for 4th place in the Pole Vault event (Result - 8’6”). Vestal’s Ariella Rabineau and Trumansburg’s Sofia Shaff also recorded an 8’6” distance in the pole vault. 

According to Marathon head coach and athletic director Todd James, Marathon was unable to qualify any athletes to the New York State championship meet.
