A shift in the winds and the chance for rain showers will lead to improving air quality today.

Wildfire smoke should be much less today as the main plume from the fires in Quebec heads west, centering on southern Ontario, Canada.

The persistent low off the coast of New England that has been feeding the smoke into our area is dissipating, allowing a weak low over the Mid-Atlantic to become the dominant player in the weather over the Northeast.

This has shifted winds slightly, sending the smoke to our west, while also allowing some extra moisture to move into the area in the form of scattered showers.

These showers will begin to develop this morning and will increase for the afternoon.

The individual showers will be small and short-lived, and rain amounts will not be very high. While the rain will have little impact on the developing drought, it will help with the air quality as it helps wash some of the particulate matter out of the atmosphere.

Temperatures will continue to be cool for early June with highs only around 60 degrees.

Tonight, showers will decrease, and the bulk of the wildfire smoke should remain well west of the area. Evening temperatures will fall to around 50 degrees with and overnight low in the mid 40s.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Friday: Mostly cloudy with scattered showers. Morning lows in the mid 40s. Afternoon highs in the mid 60s.

Saturday: Sun and clouds. A few scattered showers Morning lows in the mid 40s. Afternoon highs in the low 70s.

Sunday: Sun and clouds. Morning lows in the upper 40s. Afternoon highs in the mid 70s.
