County: Man steals, forges business check

A man was arrested over the weekend for allegedly being in possession of a stolen, forged check, according to a Cortland County Sheriff’s report.

The report stated that on March, 2, 2023, the county sheriff’s department investigated a fraud complaint. The investigation discovered that Joseph S. Carpenter, 36, of Binghamton, was allegedly in possession of a stolen, forged check that belonged to an undisclosed local business.

Carpenter then allegedly cashed the check at a bank in the town of Cortlandville, the report continued.

This past Saturday (July 7, 2023), Carpenter was arrested on a warrant and charged with third-degree grand larceny and second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument (both Class-D felonies).

Carpenter arraigned, released and now due to appear in Cortlandville town court on Wednesday.
