A state agency has cleared and certified the village of Homer to open a new glass recycling center, village officials said Tuesday.

Deputy mayor Pat Clune said at Tuesday’s board of trustees meeting that the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has given the village the green light to install the new center at the Department of Public Works (DPW) building. The building is located at the 2 Grove Street Extension (also known as North Fulton).

“We are going above and beyond what we need,” Clune said.

Clune added that residents will have to bring glass to the DPW and look for the yellow receptacle to deposit glass waste.

“You can also drive over to Pendleton Street to the Cortland County Recycling Center and drop off glass there as well,” Clune said.

The county recycling center is located at 137 Pendleton St. The county website states that glass makes up about 20% of the county’s recyclables stream. When processed with other waste, glass can damage the county’s machinery, the site states.

“By separating our glass we are not only able to use it for other purposes locally,” the site reads. “We are creating a cleaner, more marketable product that we will be more likely to receive revenue for in the future.”
