Air quality will be the primary concern from the weather today as a smoke plume from western Canada makes its way into our area.

This plume has been traveling from British Columbia and Alberta across the northern Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes regions for the last several days. In the wake of yesterday’s cold front, it has finally arrived here.

Near-surface smoke concentrations are expected to be greater than the smoke event we had at the end of June, but still far below what we experienced on June 7th.

Moderate to Unhealthy Air Quality Index values (101-200) are expected throughout the day. The worst air quality may come during the afternoon hours.

Otherwise, it will be quiet through the daytime hours. Limited sunshine will try to filter through the smoke until clouds increase during the afternoon hours.

An area of rain and thundery downpours will be possible this evening. Flooding looks generally unlikely, though some poor drainage ponding will be possible in any downpours. Most areas should see under a half-inch of rainfall.

Temperatures will be warm today with highs in the low and mid 80s. Dewpoints will be in the 50s much of the day but will rise into the 60s late. Nighttime temperatures will fall to the low 60s.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Tuesday: More clouds than sun with scattered showers. Lingering wildfire smoke possible. Morning lows in the low 60s. Afternoon highs in the upper 70s.

Wednesday: Partly cloudy. Maybe a stray shower. Morning lows in the mid 50s. Afternoon highs in the upper 70s.

Thursday: Sun and clouds. Morning lows in the upper 50s. Afternoon highs near 80.

Friday: Showers and thunderstorms possible. Morning lows in the low 60s. Afternoon highs in the upper 70s.
