The Cortlandville, Homer and other fire departments worked together to extinguish a fire in Cortland County.

According to a release from the Cortlandville Fire Department, the fire occurred on Thursday at the Cortland Floorcraft building on North Homer Avenue. Crews were alerted of the fire around 9 p.m.

The release noted that crews arrived on scene and found heavy fire in front of the building. Due to the volume of the fire, crews fought the fire from the outside. Firefighters entered the building and contained the fire to the front of the building, the release continued.

It took firefighters about an hour to control the fire, with crews remaining on scene to check for hot spots. Cortlandville deputy chief Mike Biviano told The Cortland Voice that crews were on scene until the early-morning hours of Friday.

Biviano noted the Cortland Floorcraft building is a “total loss.”

The cause of the fire is unknown. As of Friday morning, Biviano said the fire is still being investigated by the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

The Cortlandville and Homer fire departments were assisted on scene by the McGraw, Marathon, Dryden and McLean fire departments. Also assisting on scene were the Cortland County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, Cortland County Department of Emergency Response and Communications, New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Cortlandville highway and water department, TLC-EMS and National Grid.

The Killawog and Virgil fire departments provided standby coverage.
