The Cortland County Health Department recently provided a post on its Facebook page about data collected from speed crashes in the county, while noting traffic safety programs.

According to the county health department’s Facebook post, from October 2021 to September 2021, speed was the “contributing factor” to 334 crashes in the county.

“Speeding endangers not only the life of the speeder, but all of the people on the road with them,” the post noted. “Speeding is not worth it.”

The post stated that this resulted in 77 people injured and two fatalities in the county. Further data noted that 68 out of the 334 crashes involved young drivers (ages 16-20), and 21 of the 334 crashes involved alcohol.

“Speeding related crashes are not inevitable, they are preventable,” the post continued.

The county’s traffic safety program works “to reduce and prevent traffic-related injuries and fatalities through community educational outreach, programming and events” in the area.
