Man leads officers on brief ‘failure to comply’; more arrests in county sheriff’s blotter

A man led officers on a brief “failure to comply,” individuals arrested for larcenies and more in the latest Cortland County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Omar J. Punter

Punter, 40, of the city of Ithaca, was arrested during the early-morning hours of Saturday (Aug. 12).

The county sheriff’s report stated that officers attempted to stop a vehicle on Luker Road in the town of Cortlandville passing through a red light at the intersection of Madison Street and Route 281.

According to the report, Punter led officers on a brief “failure to comply.” Punter “failed to negotiate” a turn from Luker Road to McLean Road, crashing into a fence on McLean Road in the process, the report continued.

Punter was not injured in the crash. The report, however, noted Punter was driving while intoxicated, and in possession of a loaded handgun, cocaine and a digital scale.

Punter was charged with a DWI, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon (a Class-C Felony), tampering with evidence (a Class-E Felony), seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance (a Class-A Misdemeanor), second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia (a Class-A Misdemeanor), unlawful fleeing of a police officer (a Class-A Misdemeanor), second-degree obstructing governmental administration (a Class-A Misdemeanor), reckless driving (a misdemeanor), and several vehicle and traffic violations.

Punter was arraigned and then sent to Cortland County Jail on no bail. He is due to appear in Cortlandville town court at a later date.

Jennifer L. Felton

Felton, 44, of the town of Berkshire, was arrested on Monday (Aug. 14).

The county sheriff’s report stated that Felton stole merchandise from the Walmart store in the town of Cortlandville after being banned from the property.

Felton was charged with third-degree burglary (a Class-D Felony) and petit larceny (a Class-A Misdemeanor). She was arraigned, released and now scheduled to appear in Cortlandville town court at a later date.

Sara L. VanHousen

VanHousen, 31, of the village of Dryden, was arrested on Saturday (Aug. 12).

The county sheriff’s report stated that VanHousen stole merchandise from the Walmart store in the town of Cortlandville after being banned from the property.

VanHousen was charged with third-degree burglary (a Class-D Felony) and petit larceny (a Class-A Misdemeanor). She was arraigned, released and now scheduled to appear in Cortlandville town court at a later date.

Neil A. Malakar

Malakar, 24, of Homer, was arrested during the early-morning hours of Sunday (Aug. 13).

The county sheriff’s report stated that officers responded to the area of Route 215 and Starr Road in Cortlandville. According to the report, it was discovered that Malakar was driving while intoxicated.

Along with his DWI charge, Malakar was also charged with driving with .08 of 1% or more of alcohol and driving while ability impaired by alcohol and drugs combined (all misdemeanors), and consumption of an alcohol beverage/possession of an open container (a violation).

Malakar was released on appearance tickets. He is due to appear in Cortlandville town court at a later date.
