Homer officials recently announced that trees in the downtown area of the village will be removed and replaced in the coming years.

The village will remove the pear trees that are on each side of Main Street in front of the downtown businesses. What they will be replaced with has yet to be determined, village mayor Hal McCabe said.

McCabe, however, noted it could be replaced with different trees or planter boxes.

“We have to talk to our arborist and figure out exactly what we’re replacing them with and how,” McCabe said at Tuesday’s village board of trustees meeting.

The village’s reason for the upcoming removal of the trees is due to them rotting and getting old. Village board member said at Tuesday’s meeting that “you can clearly see the trees are dead.”

“Trees are a sensitive topic in the village,” Deputy mayor Pat Clune said at a previous meeting. “We like to give (residents) enough of a heads up.”

McCabe said the trees will be removed either in 2024 or 2025.

“We’re going to remove them all at once. We just haven’t quite figured out what we’re going to do,” McCabe said. “We do know that the two sides (of Main Street) have to match.”

Further information on the removal of the village’s pear trees remains to be seen.
