The village of Homer recently brought on a new, and potentially temporary, recreation director.

Cortland resident Andrew Pierce was selected as the village’s new recreation director on an interim and part-time basis. Pierce steps in as Homer’s current recreation director, Zach Pollak, is on leave for undisclosed reasons.

Pierce heard about the open position at a recent Youth Bureau Commission meeting in Cortland. He will handle youth sports and community events in the village.

“It’s kind of like riding a bike,” Pierce said. “I help with practices, coordinate events and help get kids into facilities. It’s exciting.”

Pierce has associate’s and bachelor’s degrees in recreation from Tompkins Cortland Community College and SUNY Cortland, respectively. He worked at the Cortland Youth Bureau and a wide variety of recreation departments, including the Town of Dryden Recreation Department from 2008 to 2016 and 2018 to 2022.

“I haven’t planned on (taking the position), but now that I’m doing it, it’s like doing the same thing but down the road a bit,” Pierce said.

Pierce, who started the position with the village earlier this week, is looking forward to getting sports and events rolled out in Homer.

“Homer has always been down the road, so I’m excited to be part of the neighboring community,” he said. “It’s been very welcoming.”
