The McGraw varsity girls soccer team won their first game of the season against Moravia with a score of 2-0 on Wednesday. The game was also the first round of the McGraw Girls Soccer Tournament.

“I thought the team played really well,” said McGraw head coach Sara Yonta. “We are missing a few girls due to vacation and eligibility, so just for them to come out the way they did, and put them in different positions, they played really well.”

“I think we have a lot of potential,” added coach Yonta. “We have some younger players that came up. People are going to be settling into new positions, but I think they’re ready to take on the season.”

The McGraw Lady Eagles started things off well with a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The Eagles kept their composure in the second half to score an additional goal to give them their first season win.

Both of McGraw’s goals were scored by Junior Lexi McCall.

When asked about her thoughts on the game, McCall said “I thought that we did really well, and we stayed together as a team.”

“We started very strong with our first win, so I am hoping this will help us to continue winning,” added McCall.

One of McCall’s goals was assisted by Hannah Wilson. McGraw goalkeeper Heather Magee recorded a total of 7 saves in the game.

The now 1-0 Lady Eagles will host the championship game of the tournament at McGraw’s Bennett St. Field on Friday (September 1st) at 10am against Bainbridge-Guilford.
