Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (August 31st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Cazenovia

The Cortland Lady Tigers started their regular season off with a 1-0 win over Cazenovia on Thursday. 

It was a close game, but Cortland’s defense was able to shut down Cazenovia, leaving them scoreless. 

 “It really helps having so much experience in the back line with all seniors - Valerosa Gambitta (captain), Campbell Bush, Sarah Williams, Reese Whitney, and Karamia Montalvo (captain),” stated Cortland head coach Ilona Ryon.

Cortland goalkeeper Lauren Mott also recorded a total of 15 saves in the game. 

The only goal of the game was scored with about 30 minutes left in the second half by Cortland’s Maude Terwilliger off an assist from Claire Turner. 

Cortland’s next game will be played at home against Chittenango on Tuesday (September 5th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Faith Heritage

The Homer Lady Trojans were successful at winning their regular season home opening game with a score of 3-1 against Faith Heritage. 

Homer was led by Kennadie Taylor (2 goals), Mikayla Smith (1 goal), Khloe Young (1 assist), Reese Kline (1 assist), and Alex Kellaway (4 saves). 

Note: Faith Heritage’s stats were not made available by the time this article was written. 

The now 1-0 Lady Trojans are scheduled to take on Groton at home today (Friday, September 1st) at 2:30pm. We will have a recap of that game on our website on Saturday (September 2nd). 

Varsity Volleyball: Cortland vs. Westhill

The Cortland varsity volleyball team lost in three sets against Westhill on Thursday. With this loss, Cortland started their season off with a 0-1 record. 

Cortland was led by Rileigh Madden (3 kills, 9 digs & 9 assists), Katie Harris (1 kills, 9 digs & 9 assists), and Alizabeth West (2 kills & 7 digs). 

Westhill was led by Ava Baty (1 kill, 6 digs, 26 assists & 9 aces) and Alice Bender (14 digs, 2 assists & 2 aces).  

Up next, Cortland will Marcellus on the road this upcoming Tuesday (September 5th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Volleyball: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer varsity volleyball team won in three straight sets against Mexico at home Thursday afternoon in order to start their season with a 1-0 record. 

Homer was led by Mackenzie Hubbard (6 kills, 6 digs, 6 assists & 5 aces), Lilly Sorenson (6 kills, 3 digs, 7 assists & 3 aces), and Mallory Douglass (8 digs & 2 assists). 

Mexico was led by Kaylee Halsey (3 kills, 1 block, 12 assists & 1 ace) and Rachel Gagnier (5 kills, 1 block, 5 digs & 2 assists). 

Homer was scheduled to play at home against Fulton at 12:30pm today (Friday, September 1st). We will have a recap of that match on our website on Saturday (September 2nd). 

Varsity Golf: Cortland vs. Christian Brothers Academy (CBA)

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost 252-193 against Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) on Thursday. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).

The Marathon Lady Olympians defeated Cortland 7-0 at Cortland high school Thursday afternoon. With this result, Marathon started their season with a 1-0 record, while Cortland fell to 0-1. 

Marathon was led by Delaney Reilly (3 goals & 2 assists), Autumn Young (2 goals & 1 assist), Savanna Warfield (1 goal), Jordin Chrysler (1 goal), Abby Edsall (1 assist), and Jazlyn Howe (1 assist). 

Cortland goalie Liz Slavick recorded a total of 14 saves in the game. 

Marathon was scheduled to play Homer at Homer high school today (Friday, September 1st) at noon. We will have a recap of that game on our website on Saturday (September 2nd). 

Cortland on the other hand will host Cato-Meridian on Tuesday (September 5th) at Cortland high school at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Mount Markham

The Homer Lady Trojans suffered a loss against Mount Markham at home in their first game of the regular season on Thursday. The score was 1-2, in the favor of Mount Markham.

Homer was led by Mallory Kline (1 goal), Molly McMasters (1 assist), and Aislynn Cobb (2 saves). 

Mount Markham was led by Rebecca McClave (1 goal), Layla Rice (1 goal), Kacie Owen (1 goal), Haley Otis (1 goal), and Hayley Lee (2 saves).
