The Cortland Lady Tigers won a tight game against Marathon with a score of 1-0 at Cortland high school Monday night under the lights.

The only goal of the game was scored near the end of the first half, as Cortland senior Madison Fitch crossed the ball to fellow senior Reese Whitney in the center of the box to score off a header.

When asked what her thoughts were on the game, Cortland head coach Ilona Ryon said her team had “good possession. I like our new formation. We were doing good in the first half, switching the point of attack. I want to see us finish more. It’s frustrating to see 21 shots and one goal.”

Coach Ryon spoke on having 11 seniors, and hoping they would set the tone for the team. She said, “ I’m hoping for a little bit more leadership from our seniors, and (for the team to have) a finishing mindset.”

Both teams had chances to score in the second half, but were not able to convert.

“This is the first time in my head coaching career that we played Cortland,” said Marathon Head coach Beth Anne Duncan. “We knew it would be stepping out of our comfort zone, playing out of our league and a tough opponent, but it’s good for us to see other competition.”

With the clock winding down, the Lady Olympians had a couple of opportunities to tie the game, but Cortland’s defense stood strong to hold the shutout win.

Coach Duncan praised her teams’ effort in the second half. “I was telling them (Marathon players) that there was more fire in the second half that we need to carry over into our next game.”
