Marathon Lady Olympians win senior night game vs. Newark Valley; Coach Funk celebrates 50 years of coaching (photos included)

The Marathon Lady Olympians celebrated senior night with an 8-0 win over Newark Valley Wednesday evening at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary School.

The Lady Olympians also honored their head coach Karen Funk, as she completes 50 years at the helm for Marathon this year.

The Marathon community along with friends, family and former players from all over the country came to celebrate coach Funk, who was honored at halftime.

Senior Night

A total of five seniors (Haylee Chrysler, Jazlynn Howe, Ella McConnell, Erika Olsen, Melodie Sutton) were recognized before the game started on Wednesday.

Marathon started the game off firing from all cylinders with 3 goals in the first quarter. 

The Lady Olympians would go on to extend their lead to 6-0 before the halftime festivities. 

Following the halftime festivities, Marathon kept their composure allowing them to score 2 additional goals, while also getting the shutout win. 

“Up until halftime, I liked what I saw,” said coach Funk. “Halftime for me was very emotional.”

“In the second half, I tried to mix up some things for us to work on as we go into the postseason,” added coach Funk.

Marathon was led by Delaney Reilly (3 goals & 1 assist), Melodie Sutton (1 goal & 2 assists), Catherine Newkirk (1 goal & 1 assist), Sophia Hansen (1 goal & 1 assist), Savanna Warfield (1 goal), Autumn Young (1 goal), and Cassandra Forrest (1 save). 

Newark Valley goalkeeper Grace Guiles recorded a total of 12 saves in the game.

With this win, Marathon improved to an overall record of 11-4. 

The Lady Olympians will look forward to playing in their last game of the regular season this Friday (October 13th) against Maine-Endwell at Maine-Endwell high school. The game will begin at 7pm.
