Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 11th)

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost in four well fought out sets to Central Square at Cortland junior-senior high school Wednesday night. With this loss, Cortland has fallen to an overall record of 6-7. 

Cortland was led by Katie Harris (8 digs, 17 assists & 1 ace), Brenna Hogan (3 kills, 1 block, 14 digs & 1 ace), Rileigh Madden (8 kills & 8 digs), and Natalee Kressler (11 digs, 1 assist & 1 ace).

Central Square was led by Nadia Frigon (12 digs, 36 assist & 11 aces), Gabrielle Basile (11 kills, 12 digs & 4 aces), Natalie Bush (11 kills, 7 digs & 2 aces), and Olivia Scheuer (17 digs & 1 ace). 

Up next, Cortland will host their last home game of the regular season against Jamesville-Dewitt on Monday (October 16th) at 6:30pm.

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Lady Trojans fell to an 8-7 record after losing to Westhill on the road in three straight sets. 

Homer was led by Lilly Sorenson (6 kills, 9 digs & 2 assists) and Mackenzie Hubbard (3 kills, 6 digs & 6 assists).

Westhill was led by Ava Baty (3 kills, 3 digs & 36 assists) and Alison Lancette (15 kills & 4 digs). 

Homer’s next match will be at Homer high school against county rival Cortland on Wednesday (October 18th) at 5:30pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Marathon vs. Newark Valley (Senior Night & Coach Funk honored for 50 years at the helm)

The Marathon Lady Olympians celebrated senior night with an 8-0 win over Newark Valley Wednesday evening at Marathon’s Appleby Elementary School.

The Lady Olympians also honored their head coach Karen Funk, as she completes 50 years at the helm for Marathon this year.

The Lady Olympians will look forward to playing in their last game of the regular season this Friday (October 13th) against Maine-Endwell at Maine-Endwell high school. The game will begin at 7pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Cato-Meridian

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Cato-Meridian with a score of 9-1 in order to improve to an overall record of 6-9. 

Homer was led by Molly McMasters (4 goals), Mallory Kline (2 goals), Haley Tucker (1 goal), Ava Armstrong (1 assist), Isabella Guido (1 goal), Brylee Darnell (1 goal), and Emilee Wakula (1 assist), and Aislynn Cobb (2 saves). 

Cato-Meridian was led by Ashley Watchorn (1 goal) and McKenna Morsdorf (7 saves).

Homer will now play their last game of the regular season on the road today (Thursday, October 12th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Cortland vs. Cazenovia

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost 0-6 against Cazenvia, making them fall to an 0-12 record. 

Cazenovia’s goals were scored by Maya Gilmore (2 goals), Reid McMurtrie (3 goals), and Jordan Bradley (1 goal). 

Cortland goalie Abby Clay recorded 10 saves in the game. 

Cortland is now scheduled to host Port Byron at Cortland junior-senior high school on Friday (October 13th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Madison

The McGraw Eagles improved to a 7-6-1 record after beating Madison with a score of 5-3 Wednesday evening. 

McGraw was led by Calob Sutton (2 goals), Logan Moffitt (1 goal & 1 assist), Ryan Parks (1 goal & 1 assist), Jaydon Bassett (1 goal), and Noah Heath (2 saves). 

Madison was led by Andrew Nichols (1 goal), Thatcher Bugbee (1 goal), Jacob Burns (1 goal), and Spencer Clark (7 saves).  

McGraw’s last game of the regular season will be played at home against Union Springs on Friday (October 13th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Cross Country: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Trojans competed in a dual meet against Mexico on Wednesday.

The Homer boys team lost with a team result of 39-19; while the Homer girls team won 19-50. (Reminder: lowest score in cross country wins). 

Here are some highlights from both Homer boys’ and girls’ teams:

Homer Boys

  • Damien Brown finished in 4th place overall (Time - 19:04)
  • Chris Boylan finished in 6th place overall (Time - 20:28)
  • Ethan Maslin came in 8th place overall (Time - 22:03)
  • Liam O’brien placed 9th overall (Time - 22:23)
  • Aaron O’brien came in 10th place overall (Time - 22:31)

Homer Girls

  • Ingrid Aagaard finished in 1st place overall (Time - 20:45)
  • Maggie Mahunik placed 3rd overall (Time - 25:42)
  • Lydia Andre placed 4th overall (Time - 25:43)
  • Alyssa Swayze came in 5th place overall (Time - 25:45)
  • Ruthalina Caravella placed 6th overall (Time - 25:46)
