Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 13th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Football: Homer vs. Cortland

The Homer Trojans won their 12th straight Home-Cort game on Friday at Homer high school Friday night against their longtime county rival Cortland. Homer won the game with a score of 41-8. 

With this result, Homer improved to an overall record of 3-3, while Cortland fell to 2-3. Homer also moved on to a 29-15-1 record against Cortland in Home-Cort games. 

Homer’s points were scored by Wyatt Wilbur (1 rushing touchdown & 1 touchdown pass), Alexander Votra (3 rushing touchdowns & 1 two-point conversion), Ethan Knight (1 touchdown reception), Brycen Poole (1 rushing touchdown), Laramy Velazquez-Ramirez (3 extra point kicks). 

Cortland’s points were scored by Jaxson Gambitta (1 touchdown reception), Gage Burlingame (1 touchdown pass), Robert Atkins (1 two-point conversion pass), Daniel Jackson (1 two-point conversion reception). 

Up next, Homer will play on the road agency Syracuse Institute of Technology on Friday (October 20th) at 6pm. Cortland will host Lafayette at Cortland junior-senior high school on Thursday (October 19th) at 6:30pm.

Varsity Field Hockey: Marathon vs. Maine-Endwell

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost 1-2 in their last regular season game against Maine-Endwell Friday evening. With this result, Marathon ended the regular season with an 11-5 record. 

Marathon was led by Melodie Sutton (1 goal) and Cassandra Forrest (18 saves).

Note: Maine-Endwell’s stats were not made available by the time this article was written. 

According to Section IV, there will be a seeding meeting for the upcoming playoff tournament on Monday (October 16th).

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost 0-2 against Port Byron Friday evening. With this loss, Cortland fell to an overall record of 0-13. 

Cortland goalkeeper Abby Clay recorded 13 saves in the game. 

Port Byron was led by Kylee Cordway (1 goal), Ella Jorgensen (1 goal), Abby McKay (1 assist), Marlena Doerle (1 assist), and Katelyn Ware (1 save). 

Cortland’s last game of the regular season is scheduled to be played today (Saturday, October 14th) at 2:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Union Springs

The McGraw Eagles defeated Union Springs with a score of 4-0. This was McGraw’s last game of the regular season. 

With this win, McGraw improved to an 8-6-1 record. 

McGraw was led by Logan Moffitt (2 goals & 1 assist), Jaydon Bassett (1 goal), Brennan Wilson (1 goal), Bryce Murray (1 assist), Noah Heath (2 saves), and Zach Kahle (1 save). 

According to Section III, there will be a seeding meeting on Sunday (October 15th) for the upcoming sectional tournament. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lions ended their regular season with an overall record of 10-5-1 after beating Madison with a score of 3-1. 

Cincinnatus was led by Canden Stafford (1 goal & 1 assist), John Schuyler (1 goal & 1 assist), and Jack Stafford (1 goal). 

Madison’s goal was scored by Thatcher Bugbee. His goal was assisted by Lucas Canning. 

According to Section III, the committee will meet on Sunday (October 15th) to seed the 2023 sectional playoff tournament.
