Even over the small scale of Cortland County, the weather in the northern parts of the county may end up quite different than the southern parts today.

Low pressure will approach from the southwest today while high pressure over Canada pushes back with a flow of dry air. The result will be a sharp cut off between steady rain and next to no rain. That cut off may very well set up right over the county.

Of course, this set up spans hundreds of miles, while Cortland County runs only a little over 25 miles from north to south. Therefore, even the slightest shift in the path of the low or the strength of the high could pull the rain further north into the county or push it south altogether.

As a general rule, though, the further south you are, the higher your chances for steady rain.

Before the potentially steadiest rain arrives, some stray showers will move through during the early morning hours. These will be possible anywhere in the county.

Steadier rain will be possible during the late morning, midday, and afternoon hours. By dinnertime, the rain should be ending as a few stray showers and some drizzle.

Areas of sporadic showers and drizzle will persist through the evening and overnight hours.

With the boundary of influence between these two opposite pressure systems overhead, winds will end up nearly calm for much of the day.

Temperatures will be chilly, especially if it ends up rainy, with highs near or just above 50 degrees. Evening temperatures will drop to the mid 40s, with overnight lows to around 40 degrees.

Here is a look at the weather for the next few days:

Sunday: Plenty of clouds and some scattered showers. Morning lows near 40. Afternoon highs in the low 50s.

Monday: Cloudy with scattered showers. Morning lows in the low 40s. Afternoon highs in the low and mid 50s.

Tuesday: A few scattered showers. Morning lows in the low 40s. Afternoon highs in the mid 50s.

Wednesday: More clouds than sun. Maybe a stray shower. Morning lows in the upper 30s. Afternoon highs in the mid 50s.
