The 5th-seeded Marathon Olympians defeated 12th-seeded Watkins Glen in the opening round of the Section IV Class C playoff tournament Tuesday evening. Marathon won the game 6-0 at Marathon high school.

The Olympians took control of the game from the beginning. They kept possession of the ball and found several holes in Watkins Glen’s defense, which allowed them to score continuously.

Marathon ended up scoring 4 goals in the first half, and another 2 goals in the second half to cap off the shutout win.

“It’s a good way to start sectionals,” added Marathon senior captain Bryce Hartman. Keep them (the opposing team) with a zero on the board and put some (goals) in. I hope that we can keep rolling and make a good sectional run.”

Marathon dominated the game on both sides of the field, as they put up 17 shots and 7 corners in the game, and only allowed 1 shot and 1 corner from Watkins Glen.

“First half, we played pretty well,” said Marathon head coach Aubrey Brown. “We had about 10-15 minutes where we weren’t doing what we should be doing, and gave them (Watkins Glen) a few opportunities that we didn’t need them to have. In the second half, we got on them and got a lot of our guys in, which is always good.”

Marathon was led by Bryce Hartman (2 goals & 2 assists), Brittan Keller (1 goal & 1 assist), Robert Anderson (1 goal), Bode Carter (1 goal), Colton Oram (1 goal), Jacob Byron (1 assist), and Daniel Merihew (1 save).
