Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 17th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Chittenango (1st round of sectionals)

The 10th-seeded Homer Lady Trojans lost 1-4 against 7th-seed Chittenango in the first round of the Section III Class A playoff tournament Tuesday night. 

The game was played at Chittenango high school. 

Homer was led by Caitlin McCloy (1 goal) and Alex Kellaway (11 saves). 

Chittenango was led by Abby Scheidelman (1 goal & 2 assists), Hannah Machan (1 goal), Hannah Wagner (1 goal), and Rebecca Baldwin (6 saves). 

This loss ended Homer’s season. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Vernon Verona Sherrill (1st round of sectionals)

The 8th-seeded Cortland Lady Tigers lost to 9th-seed Vernon Verona Sherrill in a heartbreaking penalty shootout in the opening round of the Section III Class A playoff tournament at Cortland junior-senior high school Tuesday night.

This sectional first round loss brought Cortland’s season to an end. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Watkins Glen (1st round of sectionals)

The 5th-seeded Marathon Olympians defeated 12th-seeded Watkins Glen in the opening round of the Section IV Class C playoff tournament Tuesday evening. Marathon won the game 6-0 at Marathon high school.

Marathon will play the quarterfinal round of the sectional tournament against 4th-seeded Afton-Harpursville on Friday (October 20th) at Afton high school at 3:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. Central Valley Academy (1st round of sectionals)

The 11th-seeded Cortland Purple Tigers lost 0-2 in the first round of the Section III Class A tournament against 6th-seed Central Valley Academy (CVA) at CVA high school. 

Cortland goalkeeper Liam Burns made 16 saves in the game. 

CVA was led by Braden Hight (1 goal), Cooper Reed (1 goal), Aiden Hall (1 assist), and Gerald Norris (6 saves). 

With this loss, Cortland’s season came to an end. 

Varsity Girls Tennis: Homer’s Effinger & Franco participate in the section III doubles state qualifiers

The Homer Lady Trojan duo of Emma Effinger and Lauren Franco won the first round, but lost in the quarterfinals of the Section III girls tennis state qualifier tournament on Tuesday.

With this loss, Effinger’s & Franco’s season came to an end.
