The 8th-seeded Cortland girls soccer team fell to 9th-seeded Vernon Verona Sherrill on penalty kicks by a 4-3 tally, Tuesday in the opening round of the Section III Class A tournament.

“It’s always frustrating to lose a game (on) penalty kicks. We had our chances during the game to put it away,” Cortland coach Ilona Ryon said.

Senior goalkeeper Lauren Mott finished with 19 saves for the Purple Tigers.

“Lauren definitely kept us in the game, being in the net,” Ryon said.

Cortland outshot VVS, 24-17, and had the advantage in corner kicks versus the Red Devils (11-3).

“We had a lot of shots to the keeper, but we weren’t testing her that much,” Ryon said. “Decision-making held us to that stalemate.”

The Purple Tigers capped their season with a 6-10-1. The team will have 11 seniors graduating next year.

“(The seniors) should be proud of themselves, not just for this game but the whole season and their whole career,” Ryon said. “They’re an awesome group of seniors. They built positive friendships not only on the field but off the field.”
