The Homer Lady Trojan duo of Emma Effinger and Lauren Franco made it to the quarterfinal round of the Section III girls tennis state qualifier tournament on Tuesday (October 17th).

Effinger and Franco qualified to participate in the state qualifier following their sectional championship win last week. All Section III state qualifier matches were played at the Drumlins Tennis Club.

Effinger and Franco were seeded No.4 in the state qualifying bracket. Homer’s duo faced off against the No.13-seed team from Cazenovia, Grace Probe and Nora Berg in the opening round of the tournament.

Earlier in the regular season (on September 14th), Effinger and Franco lost to Probe and Berg in two close sets. However, the Lady Trojans were looking for some revenge.

Effinger and Franco ended up winning the first round against Probe and Berg in two straight sets 7-6 (8-6) & 6-2.

Here is a video interview of Effinger and Franco as well as Homer coach Nancy Cavellier following the first round:

Effinger and Franco had a small break before going into their quarterfinal match against No.5-seeded Selena Chen and Shreya Bhattacharya of Fayetteville-Manlius.

After a close first set that ended with a score of 4-6 in favor of Fayetteville-Manlius’ team, Homer’s team tried to fight back. Homer ended up losing the second set 2-6, which ended their season.

The Drumlins Tennis Club will host the upcoming semifinal round as well as the championship match of the state qualifier tournament on Thursday (October 19th). Semifinal matches will begin at 12pm.
